    Unexplained Boom

So this happened to me yesterday.

Last night I was hanging out with a few friends at home. Out of no where we heard a really loud boom, and the lamp shades in the room started to shake. It was really weird to say the least.

I did a little research, and apparently this has happened quite a bit in the last 10 years. Source

What do you guys think it was? A sonic boom? Possibly from a plane brought in to assist Boston?

They have had those in Wisconsin too. I don't remember if / what they pinned them on.

I think it's hot-shot pilots breaking the sound barrier when they aren't supposed to, during routine night flights.

Edit: I used to live near a military base (like 5-10 miles away), and every day there would be massive booms with shaking of windows, etc. This base is a big missile defense site so I chalked it up to rocket engine tests.

"Maybe it's the power trying to come back on?"

On a serious note, I'm betting it has to do with military training drills. Obviously the Air Force or Army isn't going to publicize a list of all of their planned flight drills in the area. Could even be artillery tests? Who knows.

No I didn't feel the boom, but it started shaking almost immediately.

Yeah I hear some people use sonic booms as an explanation. Are commercial pilots allowed to fly that fast? Are they even able to?

not many commercial planes can fly that fast or even close, none of the larger ones anyway
they test missles here all the time, you hear booms 20 miles away.

Inb4 "Just weather balloons" when government ends up not knowing what it was. They've used that in most unexplained cases in the past, I guess it will be their answer now. Anyways, I doubt it would be a air-craft breaking the sound barrier, you wont get shaking houses and tons of 911 calls, perhaps the window thing.

    Anyways I'm curious now. >.<

Didn't they say something about the continental plates nudging each other or maybe it was volcanic activity breaking up the crust? Also, isn't Yellowstone overdue at this point? Maybe it's Yellowstone "growling".

*shrug* As others have mentioned, it was probably a sonic boom from a jet flying nearby. I lived by a very active air force base growing up and it would happen all the time, windows and the sort would shake for a moment - sometimes you'd see or hear the jet, and others you wouldn't.

Sonic boom is the most likely explanation.
