    Hello MMO-Champions.

I need some help, and please do help. I just upgraded to MOP and everything was fine lastnight. Today I turn on my PC (everything seems fine) I go to play my Panda Warrior and all the sudden it is VERY crappy FPS. I didnt change anything from lastnight till today. I can keep all my settings set at "high" but I have to turn my view distance to low in order for me to get more than 30fps. I have out my DXdiag below. I donno what to do, please help!

Well, the first thing I see is that you have an Alienware.

    -!-

    I kid, I kid.

Seriously though, have you checked your temperatures (Use HWMonitor if you don't have it) and made sure that any antivirus/antimalware isn't running some consistent check in the background? Those are the first two things I usually check.

Open task manager, check if something strange is using all your CPU.

    Reinstall your graphics driver.

Change your USB devices to other ports > just where mouse is, put keyboard and visa versa (strange but can help).

    Reboot PC? (obviously).

    Try and run without addons.
That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange Aeons even Death may die.

I did restart like 5 times, I just clean reinstalled my graphics drivers, moved around usb ports -- even ran it with all my virus and network protection off -- same deal... I can max all settings to HIGH but I have to have view distance to low or I get less than 30 dps... when view distance is low I can over 75fps.. soon as I tick it up once, it goes to 20ish. This is so odd since lastnight everything was just fine.

Before you try anything complex try disabling all your addons. I can't tell you how many times a broken or out of date add on has dropped my fps to a crawl.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your system will struggle.

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.7GHz
Card name: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series

Your CPU is not powerful enough to push the kind of data that WoW demands.. Its a notoriously CPU heavy (in respect to CPU to GPU demand)
Your GPU is not powerful enough to take up the slack that your CPU leaves..

I have a similar system ( a nettop that I use to stream stuff to my TV) and it plays WoW in vanilla land and TBC just fine! But when the detail cranks up in the newer areas and their higher res textures and effects, it weeps like a baby.

    EDIT:

Unless ofc, its really a 3.4ghz CPU that was snapshotted at an idling state.
In that case, make sure your GPU isn't dropping voltage.
Get MSI Afterburner, and force constant voltage!
I upgraded to a gtx 570 and my framerate halved compared to my GTX260, because it was such a paltry load, it dropped the voltage to save elecrickery and thus apparenetly stop people killing whales and Dolphins.

Not one of the bastards has thanked me....

If it is just because MOP adds new graphics and crap, then how come I got the same problem when I start a new NE druid... and NO one runs around that starting zone anymore..... it doesnt matter what zone im in, same crap -- and like I said, I have always played on High and had a constant 40fps till this morning all the sudden.... I dont understand. :-(

    ---------- Post added 2013-02-14 at 12:06 AM ----------

I got that Afterburner program, but I bump up my ciew distance my GPU is at like 99% which causes VERY low FPS... but again.. why would everything ti be lastnight and all the years I played WoW on this laptop, and NOW all the sudden today it is crap???

His CPU will be fine for another year or two, same with the GPU.

We've got 42x 5870's at work, with an AMD Phenom II x6 1100t and WoW runs decently at high settings.

Try listening to what Chazus said, monitor your temps on both the CPU AND GPU.

Getting that from dxdiag -> your CPU is underclocked.

Edit: Ow you have a laptop :P, seems like you have a problem with the turbo boost actually. Try to disable as much as possible apps and download cpu-z, just run wow in halfscreen move a bit and keep an eye on the cpu frequency. The max turbo frequency is 2.93GHz but that's only if one core is being used, 2 cores its lower, 3cores lower, 4cores lower.. Wow only uses like 2 cores effectively and a tiny bit of a 3rd core so my guess is your CPU freq should be around 2.5 or 2.6GHz

It says it at like 2.8GHz..... but I donno what to do now.... like I said, all of a sudden it just started sucking today.

    dx11 to dx9

I see you use Dx11, try switching it back to Dx9 in graphical options (in game) - worked perfect for me when i had almost same issues, and visual difference is so little that it shoulden't bother you if you arn't some kind of a graphical maniac.

If you do this with task manager open monitoring CPU usage, what does the usage look like? are any cores maxed out at all?

Uhhh, that's the DirectX version of the OS. Not what the actual game is running at.

Besides, DX11 provides performance optimizations, not just tessellation improvements.

It looks like 1 and every now-and-then another one bump to the top (when I am at other than low visibility)... but im not sure why at all... like I said, yesterday everything was fine... unless when I upgraded from the trail MOP to owning MOP does it change how graphics are processed??

Well, if there is no extra processes in the backround taking up CPU cycles, i can't say i understand how it can work one day and not another.

You could try this, i don't know for sure if it works in Mists as i haven't played since mists released.

I'm in the same boat with you on my laptop. Recently my i7 laptop with gtx 460m (192bit) has been starting out around 50-60 fps on high settings, and then drops to 30 fps and then down to 15 fps which did not happen before. I'm not sure if it is 5.1 or not but this is extremely irritating.

And before everyone here goes through the usuals, yes I - reinstalled drivers 290 to recent beta, checked settings, nvidia control center, direct x libraries, power settings, checked temps, checked voltages, checked clocks, reinstalled windows, etc. This is a computer that easily ran wow at a steady frame rate and now it does not. Other games like League run perfectly fine at a steady frame rate, but WoW is the problem where it starts high 60 fps for a few minutes, drops to 30 randomly and then slowly loses 1 frame every few seconds until it hits 15 fps. I'm about to give up on this, and it seems I'm not the only person with this problem. This actually happens in starcraft 2. I start a game sit there at 60-80 fps on ultra, and then it drops to 40 fps for a few minutes then down to 30. This was in a test game with no other units, just my army of 6 scv running back and forth.

And again this only happens in blizzard games. So fucking annoying.

So spent a lot of money on alienware and games just doesn't run smoothly? Well this is when you buy something very expensive and trust someone to build your computer that doesn't know perfect harmony for proper gaming. I was tempted to buy i7 when I was upgrading but I bought i5 and better GPU at the end and damn I'm happy now. I get max FPS in wow over 200 in some areas and average 120 in stormwind. I bought i5-3350P, GTX 660, ASUS P8H77-V LE and 8 gigs of RAM 1600MHz. Games are running perfectly on that machine! :3 I paid little over 500€ for that 4 parts rest I had from previous computer).

Bootomline is that for gaming you never buy computer with CPU 8 core but 2 or 4 cores are more than enough. Maybe this will change with time. For now is better to buy some more RAM and better GPU card and/or SSD.

For your system I can say this: as I see you have laptop. I bought toshiba gaming notebook some years ago. First it was slow as yours but then I put 2GB more of RAM and switched from 5400rpm disk to 7200rpm. It was major difference and I played WoW and other games on that notebook with no problem. My reccomendation is that you check speed of your HDD. Sometimes games are constantly reading something from HDD and it can take down your FPS by a good margin. This is specially seen in MMOs like WoW is. Also check RAM frequency and if your GPU card is on x16 speed or not. As I see you have too much money on your place I would put SSD in that notebook.

Next time you buy new computer go on the web and do some study. Don't just buy anything that looks good and have big price tag. That is not garantie for getting good system. If it is unbalanced or unused then is no point to buy it. If you would like to brag to your friends about it then eat it up at the end.

Just a wild guess here, but have you checked to see if VSync is enabled? If it is, try disabling it.

VSync will try to match your fps to your monitors refresh rate. If your monitor is 60hz it will lock the FPS at 60. If your fps dips below 60 your fps will be cut in half, meaning 30 or below.

Almost never does it do that. Only in crappy engines does it do that.

I am out of ideas.... this is making me mad. I really dont want to have to reinstall windows and start over -- I have never had any problems with my laptop before, I know what im doing, I dont download dumb crap -- this is bullshit.
