two things: must sound badass, and must relate to something that feels close to me (most of the time a band or a song as I'm a music buff).

Mine was altered from a book and i can't even recall which, the char name was Lagwim and if i recall he was an ugly murderer in the book so since i was going to be a big ugly troll i though that was fitting but some bugger had taken it so changing the last letter worked and i've used it since.

I used to have a similar experience... people I just met or sometimes called me: Veal (as the meat) - annoyed me to bits

Interesting to see how people come up with their names.

I usually go through a very long character creation process and even though I'm not a RPer, in my head without conciously doing so I form a personality and a past and the way the character would speak and the like. Sometimes during that process the name already comes up, sometimes, it's when I'm done and I look at it and I usually know within 10 seconds what its name will be. They're almost always 100% fantasy, made up names that sound 'right' to me, to that character, and are super varied. My lock has a short and to the point name, my hunter a longer name, my druid an actual existing name. My paladin doesn't have a fantasy name, but more of a 'nickname' that I thought suited her.

It happens rarely that I don't have inspiration like that, but when it does, I usually start hating the name and even the character at some point or another.

This usually works for my nicknames as well. I have various nicknames for various sites, Cirque is uniquely used on Mmo-champion. It matches my personality, and I was intent on trying to be as much myself as I can be on MMOchamp, as opposed to creating a persona as I would on most other sites depending on the needs and what I was doing there.

Brayden (new server meant new spelling sadly) is the name of a baby who was born around the same time as my char. I thought it was such a terrible name I just had to have it. My mage (Yalased) is a modified form of Ealasaid, an olde English name for Elizabeth that I selected when she was a Worgen. And Dotses is a cutsey pet name my husband gave me

Playing Baldur's Gate 2 YEARS ago, making a half-orc barbarian I came up with Venzir Bloodfist. Later added the extra "i" in Vanilla closed beta, been my name ever since really.

Amazing sig, done by mighty Lokann

Played some Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, a lance had the name, thought it was pretty nice and so it was given to my warrior.

I think your name is pretty original tbh.

Mine started off looking for clan names for my CS team. I absolutely loved the one I had in mind but the other 4 decided something else before I got my say so I eventually used it for me.

    I have a few methods.

    1. Find name websites that also give the meaning of the name, and search through until I find a name and meaning I like. My Monk (Meixiu, or Mei Xiu), Death Knight (Varya), and a couple other characters have used this method. It's also how I got Kisho, which is my general user name on the internet. If you find a guy called Kisho on a different website, it could be me! (Keyword: 'could'. If you find a Kisho signed up a bestiality porn website... probably not me. Probably. Cough.)

    2. Type random things into the name generator, edit it slightly, take out letters and add new ones in, etc., until you get a decent name. my Druid (Feren), second Hunter (Saeria), and a few other characters were born from this method.

    3. Use names from the stories I'm writing, which in turn may have been generated from method 1 or 2. My first Hunter (Eamara), Paladin (Mirele), and a couple others have used this method.

    4. Look up stuff like 'usual Tauren names' or 'usual Gnome names' to help inspire me if I'm making a Tauren or Gnome (or whatever race it may be). My Warrior (Talpa), and Warlock (Sparkford) used this method.

    5. Make a super awesome pun that is just AMAZING and I'm super proud of it. My Rogue, Wylkins, used this method. To explain: Wilkins is a very british name, and Wylk is (in some language, can't remember) a word for Wolf. He's a Worgen, who are very british, ergo Wylkins.

Lots of ways to come up with names!

For my two most played characters:

Hedgerow - night elf, female, feral druid - I wanted a name that sounded fun, vaguely contextually relevant but also androgynous, because I prefer to make it as clear as possible, without actively blurting it out in every PuG, that I am a bloke using a chick avatar. I went with Hedgerow because night elves are arborphiles and because of lines like, "There's nothing like sleeping in the forest under the moonlight.", I always imagine night elf ladies' hair looking like they've been, as we say in the UK, 'dragged through a hedge backwards'. Thus, 'Hedgerow the druid' was born! \o/ (Plus, it's kind of cool that the name reminds me of Stairway To Heaven ("If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now...")).

Helathin - blood elf, male, paladin - This one was more straightforward. I wanted an elvish sounding name and I thought it'd be amusing, at least for myself, to choose a name that was a bit self-deprecating, making fun of my being underweight. So, I combined the now unfashionable slang word for 'Very', "Hela'", with 'Thin'. Very-Thin -> Helathin. Sounds sufficiently elven to me. =B

Well, my main is called ItsRedd. Basically anywhere on the interwebs, I'm called ItsRedd.

Redd is my RL nickname my friends use, since I'm ginger. (No soul, etc, yaddi yadda.) - Redd tends to be taken by people that wanted Red however, so I just added the Its to leave the Redd bit alone and still be able to use it.

Alts and whatnot tend to be... ridiculous names. Supposed to be funny, and get boring after a while. Tank monk: Gimmeaggro. Pala: Realityking.

Oh, and one named Anitahanjoob but fear as soon as I start levelling that, I'll have to namechange it after a report or two.

my usual nick runey from runemaster from some fantasy book series including runes that i do not remember anymore

did not really want to use runey as char name in wow, as i like immersion and stuff, and it simply felt wrong (especially as
you always have the people telling me that i spelled rooney wrong -_-)

My shaman name Ovoo from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovoo
Use it for more or less anything rpg nowadays.

    Also like:
Styxz (from the river styx in greek mythology, usually for caster/range chars)
Azzoth (from Azoth, the original name of kylar stern form the night angel trilogy, for anything shadowy, assassiny)
Tiax (from the baldurs character Tiax, for any mad/chaotic/small char)
Tapio (from the finnish wood spirit Tapio for hunters/rangers)
Slashdotcom (from the fatboy slim song, cause its cool, also name of my last main warrior :O)

Honestly? Well, I think that it will help if I share everything of how I came up with the names of every char, since I never play a char if I can't create a story and background on him/her 1st.

Male Night Elf Mage named Artiatras: I searched Tolkien's elven language a lot to make his name. I still have the notes I took. I won't say what it means

Female Night Elf Priest, named Yeil: Yeil stands for Light Eyes. Li(ght) and Ey(es) are written backwards. This happened because when she was a male (I gender swapped recently after 3 years of him remaining the same male priest he was) and she was named Liey.

Male Night Elf Druid, named Olaferil: Again, tolkien's language.

Male Night Elf Hunter, named Lohil: This came up easy, as I took Lorien and changed it a bit to sound to my liking. The hint here is to pick something that you love dearly, fantasy related, and changed it enough to not ring you the bells of your old or still favourite.

Male Dwarf Paladin, named Papal: This one was funny. His beards made me think of a grandfather leaving alone in the mountains as dwarves do. Thus I named him papa(l).

Female Dwarf Shaman, named Rapounzel: I love the bodytype and the 2-tailed haircut of the female dwarves, thus the name Playing in resto makes the tails do crazy stuff!

Male Blood Elf Warlock, named Thalattios: This was a hard one. In very ancient greek the sea is thalatta. I am Greek, and remembering that, I connected it to their native language (Thalassian. Thalassa is how greeks say sea nowadays and in not so ancient greek) and added the last part of his final name with the suffix our male surnames usually have (-os). Thus the name

Male Pandaren Monk, named Baransu: Baransu is the Japanese word for balance.
