Why do they still make glass bottles for soda/pop?

Because glass breaks and people litter.

The only thing that makes economic sense to recycle is aluminum. There is no shortage of sand to make glass and last I heard, sand was pretty cheap. Wood is a renewable resource and is in no danger of running out if well managed.

Plastic is porous which is why things taste funny in plastic bottles. Glass is essentially inert and does not alter the flavor of anything contained within it.
