In short - I keep the ammount of time I spend on WoW + the level of socializing and attachment to people I met online totally secrect to friends & family.
I generally don't give out ANY real life information when online.
Only exception is online stores which need my credentials for purchases.

Everything else is done via nick name, yes even my facebook profile.

Yea I meant 500 days... Im sure you couldve figured that out

I'm still trying to figure out why you're so ashamed that you play WoW. Video games are bigger than ever and a huge percentage of the population plays them in some form. At this point they'll probably think it's weirder you had a hidden WoW habit for over 6 years than the fact that you play it.

I am EXTREMELY tired of how social we're 'required' to be these days, so when i am gaming it's more like a relief from all that. Sure, I'm a little introverted, so that also plays in, and I've also had a rather nasty experience involving some stalkiness so I basically just let only the very few close friends know. And I am the same also with irl friends, not nearly all have a clue.

My guildies used to know my name, but I wouldn't accept them on Facebook or anything. Same as you, my friends would've thought it was weird to talk to people online as mates. I also wanted to keep the fact that I played WoW a secret, as did my other mate. I succeeded at it, also, for 5 years! Haha. We always used to joke and mock WoW so people wouldn't suspect stuff. Thinking about it now we were like Dexter haha.

I don't really share my personal life with guild mates that I've known for 6 to 7 years now aswel. However I don't do this because I'm some child who's embarrassed of what people think and/or think I should be ashamed of playing. I simply don't like using social media nor feel the need to have a facetwitter account ;/

My main goal with the thread is to see if there is someone else like me... in a WoW-sense I mean.

You know like - juggling my WoW life vs. Irl life.
Friend since kindgarten, friends of 10+ years, I've seen life friends end friendship because of one of them being totally out of line, it happens not all friends from life are going to be "real friends".. It makes no difference, a real friend is one that does not judge you or criticize you for the games you play, they let you be because they know damn well that game makes you happy and they have no business fucking with your mood over something like that.

    Ontopic:
Only thing I rarely share is my facebook information, I could care less about my battletag name being given out.

This. You shouldn't be embarrassed of who you are when it comes to your friends. Not to mention adding people on facebook isn't a big deal. I have people added that I never talk to. All my friends don't think I'm great friends and so close to everyone I add on facebook.

So far, youre the closest to be like me in this context (but I never had a irl friend who played WoW)

I told my friends that I play WoW since day 1, but I just tone it down... for example I recently told one of my friends that I only play PvP... like I log on and queue for a battleground... but infact I mostly raid and log on almost every day and greet my guildies like they are my friends. (guess what I'm trying to hide from my irl friends, is the matter of fact that I have grown to make a relationship to someone accross the globe only online...)

Still, I know that 90%+ in here think I should just get some new friends etc.

Just trying to see if there is anyone doing this too =)

Personally, i'm very open about my IRL life mainly because i stopped talk with my IRL friends after highschool. I don't like just ANYBODY knowing about me IRL but i don't mind with players i've played with for a long period of time.

I think you should not be embarrassed in any way =) I know it can sound weird, because of the fact that I started this thread but my issue is hard to explain i feel (English isn't my first language) but noone should be ashamed of playing WoW. You are most likely a wonderful person

Edit : read it wrong... like you didnt dare to have a facebook... anyway... youre still most likely a wonderful person... ^^

Edit edit... not sure if I should read it as if you think Im a child X) wish I was... my issue has nothing to do with age, in any kind of way.

I do the same for the most part. Only three people I met online, one girl from WoW and two guys I met years ago from Halo, have gotten my RL name and FB and whatnot. For me the social aspect of WoW is unwanted, so I really have no desire to get close to people. Most of them simply annoy me. Of course, I typically only PvP, no raiding or anything, so I have no need for a big guild. It has nothing to do with privacy for me though, I just really have no desire to talk to most people I meet in games anywhere except when playing that game with them. I only have RL friends and that girl on real ID as well, since for the most part I want to be left alone even on the game.

I have yet to read a person in here who understand my situation X)

Conclusion ; I'm a rare kind of WoW player...

I believe during the 2012 senate race, there was a potential senator that got an overwhelming amount of bad publicity for just playing WoW.

Our entire culture has something against WoW players. I do not blame you at all for keeping your gaming habits a secret, and no one else should either.

Some people (like me) are very introverted and would rather have a definite line separating our real lives and our game lives. Some of us just draw the line at different areas. I've given out my name and where I live, but phone numbers and IM stuff sometimes is just going a little too far.

Doesn't matter how long you've known your friends or not, if they attach a social stigma to you and your gaming habits, you can lose them just like that.
I had a cool sig... then photobucket ate my pics and now its borked. :/ oh wells...

I like them alot

Here is the thing that makes me rare (I think)

    Anyone else here do this?
I really don't care what people think of me as a person. I tend to do what I enjoy and if someone decides that they can't handle it, then that is their problem. People I'm friends with know that I play WoW occasionally still, doesn't seem to have an impact on our interactions. Sure sometimes they crack a joke here and there about it, but seriously what friends don't crack jokes on each other for one thing or another?

I understand your situation. You're comfortable keeping your friends in the dark. You don't want change and are only looking for acceptance from like minded people.

I tell you it's something you have to figure out for yourself, which you already have, and you tell me that you have no interest in finding out if your friends actually care or not.

You aren't looking to find a balance - you're fine with being afraid of yourself. WoW is your dirty little secret.

It's okay, you can stop playing the victim.

Understanding and agreeing are two totally different things...

Everybody understand your situation, it's clear. But few will agree to fear about "real friend" knowing your hobby.

As far as I know, I have not stated a matter to agree or disagree on... but I could be wrong... I'm a bit drunk... actually at that state where I start listening to Braveheart music... but so far, I can still conclude, that I didn't find anyone with the same issue as me in here.

Because it's absurd. If a friend laughs at you for playing WoW or even disrespects you because of it, he never was your friend in the first place.
actually at that state where I start listening to Braveheart music...
I listen to OSTs all the time. I don't need to be drunk to enjoy them. :P

Unless I get to know the people for a long period of time I prefer keeping the two separate. I'm one of those people who likes video games because I can shift my irl bothers to one side, so I don't like intermingling them.
On the flip side I'm quite open about playing WoW if the topic ever crops up irl. I'll admit I wasn't open about it at all when I was at Secondary School simply because there were a lot people who are dicks. Now that I'm older and don't have such things bothering me I don't care who knows that I play it.
