Not in that manner, anyways. It's impossible to say whether or not they would have returned.
I think it comes down to the fact they chose their curse.
Bow down before our new furry overlords!

I <3 how bad the lore is in this game. There are defenders, there are Dragons, there are Night Elves (whom, as canon, have spent the past 10000 years preparing for another Legion invasion), there are Ancients (Cenarius), but the writers forget about this and put contradictory canon in.

I didn't write the lore. I know it doesn't make sense just like a ton of other places. But it is what it is.

And it's a clear contradiction. One of many sadly. Yes it's written, and contradicts other stuff that's written. Conclusions can't be drawn from it because both are valid lore canons.

The quest from Black Morass is more recent so it takes precedence.

Um, no. If they want to go ahead and retcon out the Long Vigil they can go ahead and do it to validate the Black Morass line. It wouldn't surprise me one bit given the state of lore. Until then, both are equally valid, and Im not going to waste time arguing *that* point so we can agree to disagree early on.
