The gold isn't important but it has been lucrative at times, I was given 10,000 gold to individually assassinate 15 officers of a specific guild once. I enjoy the hunt more than anything so I just take tips, I have friends on both factions who scout for me in return. It's fun and I'm able to maintain top gems/enchants without ever doing dailies. Most of the people who hire me do it just for a laugh and have their guildies killed, other times people ask me to kill notorious gankers, that side in particular is more common since CRZ.
Most of the time it goes smoothly, a majority die with the element of surprise, they simply don't expect it and don't react in time. On the occasion I'm unable to kill them alone as I'm not the greatest player in the world, there are people who legitimately beat me, I usually just hire a mercenary to assist. I have people who gladly help out when they're nearby, assuming none of my ex-employers are in the area then I give my fee to a nearby player. It's not about the gold when they're better than me, it's just about the reputation. The only contracts I've failed are ones who never log back on, I have a list of 329 contracts I took in 2012, 13 of them are still standing. If they come back online, I'll kill them and cross them off free of charge.
When I have the name there's nothing they can do to stop me. People have tried staying in cities for hours staying un-flagged hoping I'd give up, others bring friends and wait patiently to ambush me and even create little groups to try and hunt me in revenge but they all fail in the end. There's few greater satisfaction in WoW for me than someone who has an escort of friends, I follow for a long time waiting for them to slip up. Sliding my dagger into their back and vanishing before their little bodyguards even know what happened, the only indication I was ever there are the bones on the floor.
