Does there need to be equal representation of all classes?

It struck me in reading the details of the new Warlock only item and quest coming 5.2, why does Blizzard care so much about having all the classes be played equally? Warlock is currently the least played class, and this Warlock only stuff just seems like a desperate move by Blizz to boost their numbers. But for what purpose? The class itself is not changing, its a temporary little gimmick to get the numbers up, is it really THAT important to Blizzard to have equal columns across the board that they have to resort to this?
Do classes being played in varying proportions always indicate a problem? Or could it just be particular play styles appeal to more specific demographics?

Usually yes. I do not think they are a low pop class, the green fire is not a ploy to get people to play that class. The greatest ploy for a class was rogues back in cata ...

So long as people want all classes the same, it'll work itself out. Though grossly underplayed classes (Warlock, SHaman, and sometimes Monk fall into this category) need a boost.

They don't have to be played equally but it's still good to aim for a balance. Having once class being more played then most is not bad, but when you have more ret paladins than rogue anythings things start looking odd.
