Theres a lot of confusion in this thread to do with shyness and being an introvert. It's perfectly possible to not be shy and be an introvert.
From Wiki (I know Wiki isn't to be trusted but this is a pretty well rounded definition):
The primary defining characteristic of shyness is a largely ego-driven fear of what other people will think of a person's behavior, which results in the person becoming scared of doing or saying what he or she wants to, out of fear of negative reactions, criticism, or rejection, and simply opting to avoid social situations instead.
As others have said the above has little to do with introversion. Introversion is different however it's fair to say that shyness and introversion do have some areas where they are similar in relation to observed social behavior.
I myself am an introvert and generally prefer solitary pursuits or activities limited to a small group however I can cope with crowds perfectly well. I just need some quiet time to recover after is all. That being said I'm considerably less introverted than I used to be.
