I think they're done with MMO's after SWTOR. Doubt EA will give them another chance (even though EA is to blame for the failure of SWTOR). So thankfully no, it will not be an mmo.

I would like to see a squad based fps over an mmo. It would be neat as shit to play as a n7 team before the events of ME3.

I have recently gone back to Tor and there is alot of cool things about that game people seem to forget
but on the subject of Bioware ruining the Mass effect franchise I thought 3 did a pretty damn good job of it.
That and anyone unfortunate enough to watch the movie
( yeay more James Vega )
If everything I do is wrong then by god ill do it right

I could see a lobby based MMO where you can take missions to different planets with small groups of 4 players. It would still be 3rd person. I dont see a problem with a mass effect online game. If you dont want to play it then dont play it. I doubt i would play it but if it looked like an ME game while being online i would try it out depending on cost.

TOR had some buggy issues it's true, but what really killed it was lack of long-term progression. People played through a pretty good story and then that was just it. There simply wasn't much to do after. What makes an MMO isn't shiny graphics nor is it "exciting gameplay", its long-term achievements. WoW understands this and that's why it still exists. So does EVE though it ties you down and breaks out the leather and ball gag to make you enjoy it.

The thing with "exciting gameplay" is that a MMO has to last a LOT of hours, and "exciting gameplay" might be really fun for the start, but it still is going to get old after hundreds of hours played. If all you have is "exciting gameplay" and a good story, make a RPG.

Think of a game like FFXI. It was ALL ABOUT long-term goals. People would sit for hours grinding a single type of mob over and over and over, and love the game because it was always in your head you were getting somewhere and going to be stronger next time you go do Dynamis or fight gods or whatever you do.

SWTOR didn't get this. Yes there were some bugs, but that's really not what caused so many people to leave. People did the story but really didn't want to put up with repeating "kill 10 x, gather 10 y" quests like they already did for 5 years in WoW without a real sense of long-term goals, and with no big endgame things, there wasn't any reason to get there. Either you stuck around for a decently made story or not at all really.

Mass Effect is one of the best game universes out there, and its criminal to limit the game to a single genre. It has tremendous potential for RTS games like C&C, Space Sims like the old X-Wing/Tie-Fighter, Colony Planning like Sim City, FPS & RPG games of course, ect...

One of the great things about the IP is that the universe is big enough that there are a lot of other stories to be told. Shepard's story is great, but there is so much going on all over the universe that you could create some amazing stories using all the rich culture already built up throughout the franchise thus far.

Unless we are all wrong, and swtor did yield some how a nice profit. I don't know.

There must be a reason why so many games, triple A or indie, goes the MMO road these times
I do think you can have a much better RPG experience as single player, or maybe multiplayer but maybe possibly the MMO business is actually lucrative, even poorly made.

as for a new thing. I would love a rebirth of space cim game, the one you play with a true joystick, not a mouse control space combat.
I'm thinking wing commander, X-Wing, Il-2 sturmovik (not a space sim, but you get the idea)

If it does, I hope they learned a lot from SWTOR, for starters don't use the same engine.

The issue is that the ME series was so successful because of the story and the journey it took you on. The combat style they had enabled you to get maximum exposure to the story and helped to support the RPG concept it was based on.

The problem with some of the other genres out there is that the would limit the ability to tell the story effectively. I mean could you imagine ME being told to you as random conversations mid-battle and in between missions like SC2? It would limit the story immensely. Not to mention that why would you want to encourage EA to milk the cow anymore than they do by giving them ideas of "quick, get rich schemes" they seem to love a little too much?

I do agree however that they should stay true to the their early statement and go with a separate new story with the same breadth and depth of story and character development. The universe is a big place and there is definitely more than enough to make a new " game world" with there. This also helps to keep the "Shepard Legacy" intact

And finally as much as I would love to see the ME universe as a MMO I still feel strongly that it wouldn't do the series any justice. Combine this with the fact that Bioware/EA failed quite badly with SWTOR, I would be hesitant to put support behind such an idea.

But who knows what the future brings, all I know is I look forward to ME 4 with an open mind

    True. ME4 can be anything.

Just, for the love of god, not an MMO. I mean, yeah, it could make for a good MMO I suppose but I think it would do better as a single player game with a multiplayer add-in like ME3 had.

And I kinda want it to remain as a 3rd Person RPG/Shooter, but I won't say no to an RTS.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment here. Mass Effect is the greatest (at least in my opinion) game produced because of it's story telling and I'd really hope BioWare is smart enough to continue that tradition in ME4. It wasn't the combat or the vehicle exploration or the RPG elements that made the game great, it was the story telling. Hell, I'm not a fan of ME1's combat system at all and it still ranks as one of my favorites because of the story telling. And ME2/3 only improved upon what ME1 started.
