How much bandwidth does an mmo use?

I am fortunate to have a job where I can play on my laptop on a night shift. Im thinking if getting a 4gb 4g allowance phone contract & use it as a wiresless router at work.

The totak time in a month id play on Tera this way would be around 15 - 20 hours. Would 4gb be enough bandwidth? I wont be using this method to install patches etc.

    Thanks in advance.

an average an mmo uses 128-256k per second

    256k over 20 hours is 2GB

256k is a very high estimate, around or above the highest peak for any estimate I've seen of WoW (or pretty much any game). Generally it can use as little or as much as it needs, but online games are never going to be that high for more than the most intense situations, if even then. I doubt TERA is much different.

Yes, you should be okay, as long as you don't use this connection to download patches.
2 GB seems an accurate prediction for me (for 20 hours)
It might be a bit slow, but I think it will be playable

So not true, here in the UK when I am away travelling i regularly get around 80-100 ms on my mobile phone connection which is more than playable.

With regards to your data allowance I would suggest that you run a monitor of some kind to see what your data usage is over the course of a few days - a week.

    you should be fine

the 4xx mb days are 18+ hours of being online

4gb seems a low estimate. I know a number of friends who, between 4 of them in a household, were breaking 60gb/mo

And those four people were only using their connection to play (not multiple, not patching) an MMO?

Okay, i'm on 3g (which is dreadful) and i frequently have to monitor my bandwidth closely (shared with 2 other people, with only a 20gb plan)

I don't recall what WoW used, but Guild Wars 2 uses around 200mb a day for me. Which is ~16mb an hour at 12 hours. So it really depends on how much you play. I cant say i know how much bandwidth TERA uses, but i doubt it's much more than 20-25mb/hour, which if you're only playing for 15-20 hours, 4gb is plenty.
