Friend needs help with a new Hunter

    Hello everyone.

I'm just making a thread for a friend here. We're both going to be leveling via dungeons and he's a hunter. He just wonders is it necessary to tame new pets? Are some pets more useful than others? He has a bear right now. General info on pets would be great.

To level he'll want at least 2 pets, a DPS pet and a tanking pet. IN WoW terminology, these are a Ferocity pet and a Tenacity pet. Tenacity pets like the bear are basically personal tanks. They hold aggro and keep mobs off you. Ferocity pets like wolves, cats and more aren't as durable as Tenacity pets and don't hold aggro as well but do more damage. Use the Tenacity pet when questing solo or with you if you're not a tank. Use the Ferocity pet in dungeons.

You can have many pets but all Tenaciy pets are basically the same as one another. Ferocity pets all do the same DPS as each other. As you hit 90 and begin to raid you may want different pets to bring different buffs, but that's not a consideration leveling.

THE go to site for pets is Petopia http://www.wow-petopia.com/ which shows you all of the pets you can get and where to tame them.

Just to clarify here, Pet families are no longer linked to Tenacity, Ferocity or Cunning. He's able to respec these pets freely outside of combat. I would reccomend two pets, still keeping one tenacity and one ferocity for leveling. If he's beast master, he should grab exotic pets over standard pets. he should keep a variety of pets handy while grouping as each pet provides a unique buff/debuff for his group.

Thank you very much for the info. So right now, it's all just cosmetic?

Edit: Apparently he's trying to tame a wolf, but it says he has too many pets already. He only has 1, the default bear for a Dwarf.

Must still be really low level right? As he levels up, i can't remember what level, but he will learn an ability called 'call pet 2' which increases as he levels, but for now he can change his bear to ferocity.

call pet 2 is level 18 - just started levelling a hunter today and ran into the same issue and wondered wtf was going on

As for what pets he needs to have, there really isnt any one that is better than the other at the lower levels. As you level up you will learn to call out and have up to five pets at one time, of course only having one out at a time. And as for speccing the pet, they can be either of the three specs that suits your need. You can hit up www . petopia . com to see a complete list of pets out there. Gives you all the 411 to see what buffs they bring, and all the different looks and locations. Enjoy

I always recommend a tallstrider for the aoe armor debuff. If the aoe armor debuff goes on aoe adds, that increases everyone's dps who deals any sort of physical damage. He should probably pick up a hyena or serpent just to have the 10% attack speed buff in his stable.

Pets don't have specific talents anymore, you can respec them as you like(So a Ferocity Turtle or Tenacity Cat will do). The only thing that keeps pets unique is their special ability.

You can find the full list of pets and pet abilities at: http://www.wow-petopia.com/

For leveling as SV, I recommend Tallstrider, for the reasons Tehstool stated. It's great for AoE grinding. For dungeons, just fill your spots with the rarer debuffs/buffs, like attack speed(Hyena) or Crit(Wolf) or Mastery(Cat).
