I highly highly highly recommend weak auras. I use it to track everything from rage to energy to spell cooldowns to item cooldowns to... to... to...
For your purposes it works great. I have my rage bar set right below my toon so I'm always on top of rage and able to see what's going on under/around my feet.

My rage bar is just a simple bar with the trigger set to status-->power and power type-->rage. Then I check power %.
