Global internet slows after 'biggest attack in history'

A row between a spam-fighting group and hosting firm has sparked retaliation attacks affecting the wider internet.

It is having an impact on popular services like Netflix - and experts worry it could escalate to affect banking and email systems.
Mr Linford said the attack's power would be strong enough to take down government internet infrastructure.

"If you aimed this at Downing Street they would be down instantly," he said. "They would be completely off the internet."

He added: "These attacks are peaking at 300 gb/s (gigabits per second).

"Normally when there are attacks against major banks, we're talking about 50 gb/s."

The dispute started when the spam-fighting group, called Spamhaus, added the Dutch company Cyberbunker to its blacklist, which is used by e-mail providers to weed out spam. Cyberbunker, named for its headquarters, a five-story former NATO bunker, offers hosting services to any Web site “except child porn and anything related to terrorism,” according to its Web site.

I guess we all know the important question here... "Is our porn safe?"

i do understand that Cyberbunker which is a dutch hosting company is attacking spamhaus because spamhaus added them to their blacklist.

they were added to the blacklist because spamhaus things that Cyberbunker is supporting cybercriminals or what ever...

but the scale of the attack is not understandable. 300gb/s, while the biggest attack before it was 100gb/s back in 2010.

Its the internet. Spammers being called out as spammers, is likely the only thing that could get this big a backlash. When you hit a bank you are after money. But this Spamhaus was stepping on their e-peen. That's a lot more important to these types than money.

The Dutch police needs something bigger to break into the bunker.

However, my internet hasn't been slow. Atleast for now.

I think the funniest part is people acting surprised over the size of the attack. They... are... spammers. This is pretty much what they do all day, every day. The only difference here is that they are aiming it all just at Spamhaus instead of hosing down the whole internet.

they are a hosting company, at least they should act mature.

both sides are being childish, i hate it that we are experiencing their effect.

It is akin to vandalism or loitering without letting someone in a doorway. So... vandalism and trespassing? BUT CYBER VANDALISM AND TRESPASSING! CYBER! (jazzhands). That means they are going to get 50 years in jail each, right?

Both sides are being little kids.

Currently it's unclear which side is on the offensive. As it seems at this moment cyberbunker is being ddossed (based on the fact that their website is timing out)

Spamhaus is a very dodgy company. putting complete ISP's on blacklists if even 1 IP is doing the spamming. maybe that is justified if the ISP is warned and doesnt take action. but that is not how they work.

Another story reveals that wikileaks is hosted at cyberbunker. and this might have something to do with it.

Spamhaus are criminals who put you in black list and demand money to remove you from black list. They must be punished by all means including DDoS and bashing their heads to the wall.

Viva la CyberBunker, fighters for free internet. Out hearts are with you.

I am fairly certain that Dutch law hasn't anything regarding such a thing in it. I wouldn't expect much from that end at least

Getting bored of these basement keyboard warriors tbh. Acting like hacking these websites is doing the world a favor, it's really not.

Except that nobody is calling it hacking and it is 2 companies, not keyboard warriors in a basement

Hmm...Perhaps this would explain why my ping goes up when my brother and dad are both streaming video to their computers.

I have been wracking my brain trying to figure it out, Router company doesn't know, internet company (TWC Ha..) Says everything looks good on their end.

    Seems Far fetched though.

Meh... Its an e-peen fight. If they are spamming then they should absolutely be blacklisted. I have no problem with that at all. If they want to break the internet over their lovers' quarrel I have no problem with that either. If they actually do any real damage then the federalis will get involved and that's the last thing spammers want.

They'll wave their e-peen around for a bit and then go back to their cave.

Mine was very slow for a day, but apart from that is was no trouble at all, if this was the biggest cyber attack in history then I am not too worried.
