Building a new pc and would love some opinions

    Hey everyone!

Basically, me and my girlfriend decided it was time to get me a new pc, you'll understand why if you look at my current 'build': a 5-year old laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo T6400@2.00GHz, 4Gb Ram and a Geforce 9600M GT I put a list of components for the new comp together, mostly based on the gaming 990 suggested build.

The build would be mostly used for casual gaming (wow/lol/d3) but being able to play everything at ultra is no requirement at all.
    Suggestion:

    CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (€214.25 @ Amazon Deutschland)
    Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard (€93.43 @ Amazon Deutschland)
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (€54.98 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Storage: Sandisk 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk (€84.89 @ Hardwareversand)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card (€279.00 @ Amazon Deutschland)
    Power Supply: SeaSonic 520W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply (€76.92 @ Amazon Deutschland)
    Total: €803.47
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
    (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-03-31 20:00 CEST+0200)

    Things I am unsure about:
    1) The SSD has a really low price/gb, which kinda makes me worried for some reason.
    2) I went for the Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 instead of the Gigabyte one, because it was about 20euro cheaper. Is there any reason why I should opt for the Gigabyte one instead of the Sapphire card?
    3) I am thinking about using an old Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB (which hasn't been used all that much), is this a good idea or should I go for a new one?
    4) The case that I currently have is a Thermaltake one from 2007. Do you guys feel as though this case should suffice for the proposed parts? Also, in case I decide to OC the CPU and need more cooling, do you think the case will allow for it?

Budget wise, I'm looking at something around 850euro, but obviously if there's a nice leap in performance available for 900euro, I could be persuaded

    Looking forward to your feedback!
    -Mani

    A few things!

    1) You need a motherboard >.>
    2) At that price point, you'd be better off with a 7870 XT
    3) A cheaper power supply would also be worthwhile, like an XFX 450.
    4) I'd opt for a Samsung 840 over a sandisk for almost the same price.
    5) With the CPU, you're intent is to overclock. You ought to get a Xigmatek Gaia or CM 212 EVO

    Hey chazus, thanks for replying!

Well, I'll throw some more questions at you (also, I'm sure I also included the mobo in my original post )

    1) What made you choose the Z75 Pro3 over the Z77 Pro4, besides the price difference?
    2) Is the performance loss big, going from the 7950 with 3Gb to the 7870XT with 2Gb?
    3) Will the 450W PSU suffice if I'm intending on overclocking? It's not something that's set-in-stone, but I can see myself doing it at some point.
    4) Your thoughts on the HD / case questions?

    Looking forward to any replies!

Price, really. While your budget isn't super tight, $20-$30 can make a difference, and unless you intend on pushing 4.4ghz OC, it will do fine.
    2) Is the performance loss big, going from the 7950 with 3Gb to the 7870XT with 2Gb?
There is no 'performance' difference between 3gb and 2gb, it's more... if you do something that needs lots of vram. However the price difference between the two, the 7870 XT performs as good as a 7950, but a lot cheaper
    3) Will the 450W PSU suffice if I'm intending on overclocking? It's not something that's set-in-stone, but I can see myself doing it at some point.
It'll suffice, but it wouldn't hurt going for the xfx 550 for a few bucks more
    4) Your thoughts on the HD / case questions?
I see no reason not to reuse those. They are certainly things you COULD replace later if you want, but no need to now.

Hmm, do you know if there's any difference between the Sapphire 7870XT, or the Club 3D 7870 XT? Reason I'm asking is that the Club 3D one is 10euro cheaper
Last edited by mmocc92efd889e; 2013-03-31 at 09:11 PM. Reason: Did some researching on the Club 3D 7870XT, it seems to make a bit too much noise so I'll keep looking!

Is there a performance difference between the two? Not much, if any at all. However (I can't see the exact Club3D one you're looking at), I'm under the impression that Club 3D is sort of a budget brand, and you'd be better off spending the extra 10 on the Sapphire (even though sapphire isn't my first choice normally, Gigabyte, MSI, and Asus haven't made 7870 XTs yet). That said, the Sapphire also has dual fans, which is almost always preferable to a single fan solution.

I was looking at this one. Amazon says that the Sapphire one isn't available for shipping to my area, but that's probably because it's not in stock for another 4 days.

Reviews of the Club 3D card all speak highly about the performance, but like you mentioned, the lack of a 2nd fan + the noise level is something to consider.

edit: Found a supplier which has to Sapphire one ready to go, for 189.90euro <3

Truthfully, I imagine anyone who gets any brand of 7870 XT that isn't DOA is going to be extremely pleased with the performance for that price.

The belgian alternate webshop didn't have it in, but the dutch one did, so I ordered it there: Radeon_HD_7870_XT_with_Boost

Looking forward to putting it all together, I might even try my hand at some cable management

Very very few boards have integrated WLAN or even an adapter.

So, one final question, I think The 3570k I purchased doesn't come with a stock cooler, so I've been looking around for one, but how on earth can I determine if it will fit in my case (Thermaltake soprano dx)

For example, the CM H212 Evo looks to be something I could use since I'm planning on some small overclocking, but I honestly don't know anything about these things

    Any suggestions?
