You guys are joking, but in the 90s, during the war in Kosovo, Serbians were killed for their kidneys.

So what? The alternative is to just destroy them as medical waste. The aborted fetus is never going to have your eyes, you will never dress it up in a "onesie" or plan its play dates, it is in effect just tissue at that point.

You can argue if abortions should be performed or under what conditions they should happen, but once done there was no reason to outlaw research.

Kidding aside, if it had a soul wouldn't it be better to use it to save other lives rather then toss it into an incinerator?

While I'm not disagreeing with you, the actual laws didn't prohibit research so much as restrict them to what materials they had, or somesuch. IIRC, even at the time they had already surpassed the need and the debate was mostly political anyway. I could be wrong though.

On a different note, an elderly friend of mine that has knee/back problems has seen some of the articles about rebuilding cartilage via stem cells, but none of her doctors will even discuss it, acting like it's some voodoo or something without explanation. Even in medical fields there is much debate that isn't really "scientifically founded".

No, not really. The source of the cells is unused fertilized eggs from IVF treatments. They never develop into anything that would be termed a fetus.

Set in the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Well, not quite. This is using old kidneys to make 'new' ones. If there isn't a kidney to be donated from a corpse or person then there still won't be a kidney.

Doctors are tight lipped about anything illegal, not because it's unfounded voodoo. When a small misunderstanding can lead to lawsuits and revoked licenses... yeah doctors tend to be pretty jaded because people are lawsuit happy.

What we really need is a way to 3D print cartilaginous tissue.

This was supposed to be an edit...

Or maybe I'm just crazy and talking to myself.

Move to a country without such stupid ethics then. As said before, in Belgium they use left-overs from IVF basically (since they fertilize more then 1 egg to be sure). These embryos will never be alive anyway. Then you get the whole discussion of "what is life?!", which is just again massive bullshit. Sure, embryos in normal conditions grow to humans that think, however in the phase of an embryo there really isn't anything alive or has a consciousness.

Am I glad Belgium is actually seeing the benefits of stem cells.

It's nothing illegal, they're doing the procedure a few places in the USA, including the Miami hospital system. Not sure how wide-spread and tested it is, but the point is that her doctors don't want to find that information for her.

The "old" kidneys, though, are just the person's non-functional kidneys.
