Today, completely randomly as usual, the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" popped into my head. And I started humming it and going through it. And I realized something. Although nobody really mentions him anymore, there was a time when Uncle Sam was big. You know, all that "Uncle Sam wants you!" stuff. And I realized, he was kind of like America's mascot.
It's kind of weird to think of it that way, but what is a mascot, really? It's usually a person or fictional character that supports his team, and basically personifies it (which, judging from the way he's depicted, the team in charge at the time of his creation were old, well-dressed, probably wealthy white men...which seems about right, but that's another story :P). It made me wonder...are we the only country that has a figure like this? And where did the notion of "Uncle Sam" come from, anyway?
