why won't blizzard allow us to mod characters?

It comes down how they find exploits.
When the client is scanning for *things that should not be there*, it can't by itself know if you have just given your main character a higher pixel texture, or if you have made all enemies neon green to be easier to spot. This makes it much harder to scan for exploits because the chance of false-positives would be very high. If they don't allow it at all, then you can't complain when you get banned for doing something innocent, because it is still against the rules.

Truth be told, I don't think they actively scan for it anymore. The model editing scene was at it's peak during BC and started dying during WotLK. I also suspect that their main issue currently are botters. I've been using texture edits for well over a year and no warning, no ban, nothing.

and this is what I don't get in blizzards gripe about it. if the only who seeing this mod is the player themselves, the same as when they alter a UI setting from curse, why would it effect gameplay or anything else if its just the player seeing it.

I often would like to play a mag'har or even a dragonmaw orc with that skin/texture, and if I'm the only one who see's it from my side, it doesn't effect anyone else.[COLOR="red"]

Well it does effect the other players if you are the only player in that Warsong match who sees a 30ft tree instead of that flag.

sigh... I guess its kind of like the thing where in vanilla wow forsaken could speak cross faction. It was a great concept for RP, but because some pathetic little trolls decided to flame cross faction, they removed it.

Well is it still possible to troll others in Arenas? Had fun asking that three paladins hitting on my big fat bear skull when they are finally going to start dealing damage.

Yes you could do a lot of silly stuff in other games. GTA: Vice City had a file where you could change numbers for nearly everything NPCs did, where they would apear and even which animations they would use. Policemen walking like prostitutes - pure win.

There are plenty of reasons why, there were mods like WSG bridge, that let you just run over to the flag in the air, WSG tunnel that went under the battlefield.... you guessed it, to the flag room, etc. There were also some that change size of game assets. There were some Ice shards (or something) in Storm Peaks, that you could collect for rep. so they change that tiny almost invisible model to something like Murmur... and so on.

Just because of exploits like these, it will never be allowed.

the mod I'm speaking about doesn't really mods males, though. just the girlies

and IMHO all dem girls in WoW are attractive except for tauren and dwarves, so it's worth the risk

I'm pretty sure anything related to model/texture edits is a violation of the ToC. In most cases, if it's 1) something only you can see (like a nude mod), 2) can't be used for some form of exploitation, and 3) you don't go openly bragging/running your mouth about the fact that you use it, you're probably fine. That being said, there's always a risk that you'll get caught, and there's also a good risk that you end up losing your account over it.

I think Blizzard's main gripe is the fact that such mods can be used to exploit the game (for example, there was one a few years back that'd let people make tunnels and run under the ground in WSG where other players couldn't see/attack them while they grabbed the flag), and they just kinda have a blanket rule to cover all of that. As I said, you're probably fine if it's something harmless, but it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to risk your account for hawt naked elf boobies.

Let's put it another way: Back in the dark days of the mid-1990's, there was a little game called Team Fortress Classic.

Someone developed a model hack where a cylinder several miles long poked out of the barrels of sniper's rifles.

Outside of model swapping the only proper custom models I've seen are in the categories of bigger boobs and high heels etc...

I used to use alot of custom texture back in the day, every time I got a new weapon I'd paint it myself

I'm honestly surprised I didn't get banned when I grinded netherwing rep with eggs, because people in the past used to mod the model to something huge so they knew where they were. Did it in like 2 days :| lol

I meant to imply that I did not cheat, if there was a misunderstanding or if I was not clear enough. Just that I checked all my known spawn locations of the eggs every half an hour for two days.

I think it's not about changing models but changing game files. It's not even about personal cheating much. When you can change your models internet will be filled with warcraft models to download and when you do your account is gonna be hacked. And all other problems you can name. So it seems unlikely for a long while.

Because they're assholes and they know that once you give modding possibilities all the point of grinding gear for transmogrification becomes for naught.

Thus another aspect of World of Grindcraft becomes pointless and they have to struggle to come up with another grinding system to make players keep playing.

Didn't a guild in vanilla skip some trash in AQ using something like this, getting their whole guild banned? That's pretty much why they can't allow it. If they were to allow it then it would cause them a great deal of trouble checking everyone's clients to see if the textures they were using are ok and not exploiting.
