How is it enjoyable? They are terrible.

I don't say I never seen Anime that I would have liked. There are things like Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing, Blue Gender (this suffered from all the above, but the backdrop was too good) Ghost in a Shell, Jin-Roh, or the brilliant Cowboy Bepop.

These also use a lot of character exposition but they make sense and don't interupt the flow of the action. Plus they try to stay away from stupid cliches.
Uhm, because the first one's suck, and the last one's are awesome. That's pretty much all there is into it. The anime you mentioned are all for a slightly different target audience. Naruto and Dragon Ball are more for the younger people. If Dragon Ball was to come out today, I wouldn't even notice it. But it was a big part of my childhood so obviously I love it even today. Naruto came out when I was way older, and I never liked it.

The new Shippuden is nice because of the war, finally people die and the story is progressing like crazy. The target audience however is again slightly different. No goofing around, serious topics, harsh background story, famous chars die etc.

TL;DR: The anime you don't like are all for younger people. The ones you liked are for older audiences. You just like more mature anime, that's all.

Note: I completely quit watching anime. I just read the mangas/manhwas once a week or so.

I'm pretty sure Hentai is the Japanese word for "pervert". Outside of Japan it just means anime porn basically.

I seem to recall seeing a vampire nazi straight up eat a baby in Hellsing. That's hardly what I'd call "for younger people".

I just started watching Muv-Luv recently, episodes 1-3 were great, but since then (I am on episode 7 now) the aliens and giant robots have been replaced by romance and other such bollocks. Does it get better or shall I watch something else?

It's all personal preference tbh, you have said that you have enjoyed some and they suit your preference.
I started watching because i love sci-fi/fantasy and anime has some of the best for those genres.
Dragonball Z and many of the old anime defined the cliches you are hinting at and people watch them and re watch them because of nostalgia the newer ones like Naruto, bleach and one piece all have the same idea to them.
But really...other than a very very few series on normal TV the rest is trash worse than the majority of the mediocre "childs" anime.

It finishes ok but it's not a particularly good series.

My general view of people who watch a lot of anime are shy, awkward and perverted people. I've seriously seen someone watching anime porn in the school's canteen. These people generally also don't look like they shower and they smell bad. Yeah, it's a stereotype I guess. But I've seen it way too much.
Mmm, no, not really a stereotype. It's more of you being dull and ignorant. Hey, I saw this one guy who loved anime and he watched anime porn. he smelled bad, and he didn't shower. neither did any of their friends. they were also loners! Yup, dat stereotype. Maybe something like "All Japanese people who watch anime love tentacle porn" would be a stereotype.

Try watching something like Kaiji, Gantz, or Speed Grapher. They're all aimed at an older audience. Gantz is (or was) in the top 10 selling Mangas in Japan and they actually made a live-action movie based off of it. However, hardly anyone in America has ever heard of it. Coincidence? Kaiji has pretty bad animation. The first few episodes are horrible to watch until you get used to it. The psychological battles that happen create a very compelling storyline, though.

It's different strokes I guess. I happen to enjoy Naruto and One Piece. The stories, to me, are fantastic. Naruto has been going downhill lately though.

You misunderstood what I wrote. The 2nd bold part was for older audiences, like Hellsing. That's the one he likes. The first ones are for teens, like Naruto. He doesn't like these kind of anime.

The vast majority of shows you listed at the beginning there all follow the same formula because that is the nature of the show. Pretty much ALL magical girl shows follow the same formula. Same with all of the long running shows in the DBZ style.

It is the outliers that are usually the best. I see you mentioned you liked a lot of the older classics, like Vampir Hunter D, Ghost in the Shell, and Bebop. I would reccomend checking out Trigun, Outlaw star and the like.

Your best bet might be to stay away from anything that runs to more then 24-28 episodes, as pretty much all of them fall into the DBZ trap of "half the episode is the Villian and the Protagonist shouting powerup phrazes and grunting" thing.

That being said, out of all the DBZ / Naruto / Bleach style shows that i have watched, I still think One Piece takes them all out behind the shed and beats them bloody. Just stay far FAR away from the English Dub.
the reason for the "half the episode is the Villian and the Protagonist shouting powerup phrazes and grunting" thing, tends to be an issue of filler when transitioning from the manga. A single 22 min episode will cover several "chapters" of your avergae shonen jump manga (DBZ, Naruto, one peice, bleach). I follow the naruto manga for instance, each chapter (1 a week with weeks off) is about 15 pages total. action sequences can be stretched out a bit in the sow, but dialog takes alot longer to show on paper than it does in the anime. Usually the Anime isnt started untill the manga has a pretty good lead on it or is finished, but it dosnt take that long to catch up. So if its a longer series or one that keeps going like the above mentioned, they end up with a lot of filler content. They also still want things to fit nicely into a time slot, but still finish with a cliff hanger moment or some sort of resolution or turn about etc. so you combine several chapters to make an episode, then you gota fill in some time to get it to the time slot you want. then you have whole filler episodes or long breaks to give the manga some time to get ahead.

Shorter series, more episodic series (like ghost in a shell or trigun) dont have to deal with these problems as much.

Not to sound hipster or anything about it, but some of these series are simply better paced if you read them in manga form. Dont get me wrong, naruto manga has its flaws and what feel like half assed chapters. I still enjoy it since i can read in in a few mins on a Wed morning when the scanlators release it, and so if its a crapy chapter, i didnt waste much time. Though the action scenes are usualy done pretty well in the anime, though i havnt watch the naruto anime in quite some time since it was in filler for so long.

As for other good anime to watch, death note is pretty damn good, scryyed wasnt bad, but falls into some of the "dbz" pitfalls, but it wasnt a long series and had character development. as others have mentioned, trigun, out law star, samurai X/kenshin, samurai shamploo, code geas, blood reign.

    How old are you?
I started reading Dragon Ball when I was 10 years old and bought the books as they were released. I can't imagine I would get into Dragon Ball if I would discover it today.

I mean its like saying i don't get movies because of chick flicks , B grade quality etc etc. Its a medium of entertainment so i'm not sure if you fully understand what you're even saying.

And yes i'm probably beating the dead horse but just giving my two cents and i didn't read everyones reply.

Dragonball is like the father of all animes. It was the one that opened the way for animes to the western population (if not to all). If you watched it as a kid, you will love it even if you are 50 years old and never grow tired re-watching it. If i was to watch it for first time now, as a 26 years old, i would find it bad too, maybe mediocre at best. Memories is what make it great i guess.

Other than that , the most popular trio atm, is One Piece, Naruto and Bleach (while bleach stopped publiching animes), not the ones you mentioned above. Other great titles worth watching are : Hellsing OVA (fanmade one , official was crap), Death Note (no way you cant love this), Tenjou Tenge (they banned it fast not many episodes but still enjoyable) , samurai champloo ,Darker than Black ,Slamdunk and many other ... It mostly goes at your prefference.

But i would definetly recommend you to watch Death Note, if you want to be an anime fan you have to watch it at least once.

A little advice to ya OP - NEVER watch anime in english (the only one I'll ever watch in english is full metal alchemist) because they suck...the translations usually don't make a whole lot of sense and most of the english voices are abhorrent and don't fit the characters. ALWAYS watch anime in original japanese w/subs and you'll actually understand wtf is going on (most of the time if the people who do the subs aren't retarded)
when i'm looking for a new anime I go off of art style first then I read the summary to see if it sounds interesting and then I'll watch a few episodes to see if I like it but that is just the way I usually do it. I also read a lot of manga so it can be awesome when they make one of the manga I read into an anime.

here is a list of ones I've watched if you want a place to start:

    Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    Code Geass
    Angel Beats
    Sword Art Online
Star Driver (i think you'll either like this one or hate it but I loved it)
    Ghost in The Shell
    Death Note
ToraDora (ONE OF THE BEST EVER!)
    Darker Then Black

A couple of new ones that I like that JUST came out are:
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Karneval

my advice is just to watch the first episode of any anime that piques your interest, that's the only way to know for sure if you personally will like it.
here is where I go to watch most of my anime:

good luck and welcome to the wonderful wold of Anime!

We cannot go back. That's why it's hard to choose. You have to make the right choice. As long as you don't choose, everything remains possible.

If you enjoy violent anime I'd definitely give Black Lagoon a shot. The english dub is pretty good stuff too.

I hear ya, a lot of Anime and Manga are so stupendously cheesy and cliché it makes my grey matter rot. But every so often there's one that manages to draw me in, mostly because of the story, since the presentation is usually immersion-shattering unrealistic and... well... too Japanese.
One obvious warning sign for poor storytelling, bad closet humour and general awkwardness is a protagonist who is around 12 to 14 years old, with dudes just over 20 acting as old-timers content with passing their wisdom on to the next generation.

But if you look you'll find some serious ones with great and adult themes that are approached in a mature manner even if they target kids.

The fanaticism for DBZ may just be nostalgia. I first watched it when i was 13 and love it to this day, but newcomers that are my age now don't "get it" either, so you'll possibly never "get it" if you didn't watch it when you were that age.

    There are:
    Black Lagoon.
    Shingeki no Kyojin.
    Psycho-Pass.
    Suisei no Gargantia
Deadman Wonderland (lots of violence but the story wasn't that good).
No. 6 (Not to offend you but this is a slightly 'gay' anime that it story was quite nice (no adult scenes)).

see http://myanimelist.net/ for info about each one.

Baccano! because Lad Russo lives and breathes violence
Black Lagoon (season 1), because of gratuitous fanservice for people who get a stiffy from foul language and blowing shit up with guns.
Psycho-Pass, because Geass is somewhat overrated imo.
    Hajime-no-ippo, because BOXING!
Samurai Champloo, because blocking your sword with my wooden shoe makes me a badass and you about to get owned
Katanagatari, because Japan says the true most powerful Sword is the human body.
