    Could Blizzard Rectify the Story?

Let's face it, Diablo 3's story telling is HORRIBLE. I don't think I have EVER played, heard of or seen a triple A title with just such absolutely terrible story telling.

The foreshadowing, James Bond Villains with even less depth, and worse of all completely underselling the big twist made for just bad story telling all around.

But note, I haven't mentioned anything about the story itself. Why? Because, if you take out the terrible script, the story wasn't actually half bad. The harkening back to D1 showing that your hero was Leah's father and how coniving Adria is were pretty interesting plot points. If they could just update the script or simply write better for the expansion I feel like the game itself would be a lot better. I've done multiple play throughs of Warcraft III and Starcraft II and each time I gladly watched the cinematics again and followed along with the story. Diablo 3 has the potential for that as well.

Diablo as a series hasn't really been focused on story; but Blizzard attempted to focus a bit more on it this time around and half-assed it, as such it is their duty to ensure they at least do right by it if it's going to be included in the game.

So do you folks think that it's possible for Blizzard to rectify this in the expansion? Honestly it would take just a few tweaks here and there to fix D3's own story let alone doing it in the xpac.

Didn't like that much!! Still watching it!

I do hope they at least try. It would be a decent suprise to hear a well made script in the xpac. I was appalled at how they wrote Azmodan and Diablo's villainous monologue of the decade.

Here I'll do it in the next expansion Imperius becomes a D bag because well yeah he already was one meaning hes going to be a boss somewhat. Cain will somehow magically be revived along with Tyreal becoming an angel again [ Insert more here ]

    There STORY TELLING BY BLIZZ

Turning Tyreal into a ''mortal'' and killing off one of the most iconic chars which is cain was just plain fucking awful like that pisses me off pretty hard lol

It's true that the dialogues were much worse than the overall storyline. But the storyline itself wasn't that special either.

Why would Blizzard ruin their favorite character Tyrael by turning him human? It's like shooting your own foot. And why did our characters decide to kill Zoltan Kulle? I have replayed that scene a couple of times and I still don't understand it. He was actually right all along.

But the worst part of Diablo 3 is that mortals are more powerful than angels and demons. If that's the case, why even call the game Diablo and have it be about hell and heaven fighting? Might as well just have a shitload of mortals fight other mortals, since apparently they are the most powerful of them all. It renders the angels and demons totally obsolete, except even though they are the core of the franchise. That part of the storyline of Diablo 3 takes a huge crap on the established lore. Diablo 3 expansion or Diablo 4 might just as well be a generic Medieval setting game without heaven or hell theme, because they aren't important anymore.

But yeah, the dialogue is the most embarrasing. Especially act 3 and 4.

Wouldn't it be very anti-climatic to fight Imperius when we have just defeated the most powerful version of Diablo ever? Take note that Diablo whooped Imperius' ass, so why should we go back to a weaker chump to beat up?

The only thing I can think of right now that would be equal or slightly stronger than Diablo Prime would be Imperius Prime or an evil Nephalem. Both lame options if you ask me.

Well ''mortals'' which is our heros are actually Half demon and Half angel only reason why they went ''mortal'' form in the first place was due to their parents going coo-coo and fearing so they were like OH F THAT we going to make the world stone thus every generation got weaker and weaker then eventually ''Mortal'' form with dormant powers of both demons and angels.

When Tyreal was like blah blah blah world stone is corrupted I will destroy it w/e then it pretty much ''awakened'' most of the so called ''mortals'' in our world or w/e I don't know thus becoming more powerful then both Angel and Demon / prime evil / Imperius is a dick

What? I still know my Diablo lore I was fucking dedicated!

    lols

Could they? They couldn't do it in D1&2 and D3's story is medicore except impressive cinematics. I don't think they will be able to do make "great" story for Diablo.

Playing Diablo for the story is like watching porn for the plot.

I liked Diablo 3's story. It had some minor issues, but it didn't detract from the experience. I've played worse games with better storytelling and better games with worse storytelling. Diablo 3's storytelling was just fine.

I think they overdid it with the story. Also the villains talked too much and resorted to mockery either through Mass Effect style holo-ins (Asmodan) or off-screen announcements (Leablo) which took away large chunks from their intended villainy. In the original Diablo the villains were pretty much mute until you've met them and they actually displayed real contempt. Sometimes less is more.

I actually never played any of the previous Diablos. I caught up with the story following up to D3 launch and the wanderer and Tyrael both seemed super badass. The thread tying all three games together (the original hero being possessed and leading to Leah) was actually really awesome. Tyrael being a character who didn't give a crap about you as a hero or any other mortal and simply doing is duty to keep demons in check was awesome and is the character they certainly should have stuck with.

HEY! Sometimes I get that urge you know...finding out what tori's mother is going to do about her new boyfriend.

I've been playing through MP2 Inferno (never actually beat inferno) with volume turned off and the Halo 4 soundtrack playing in the background and skipping the dialogue. The game feels a million times more epic.

I just can't comprehend this though. Even Jay Wilson was like "yea, I think the story was really awesome". Even the Microsoft dude going full retard didn't make facepalm as hard as I did at Wilson's comment. There's nothing interesting or compelling about the story telling in the least.

Seeing that type of banter in a game trying to be ironic like Saints Row makes sense. But definitely not in a Blizzard game where their entire premise is building a massive and interesting universe.

    CGI expenses : $25 000 000
    Story writer expenses : $5 000

Thats what I get from watching D3 cinematics.

My part in this story has been decided. And I will play it well.

while i liked the plot and story overall, the lords of hell was way to annoying " you cannot stop our endless armies on your walls - oh, you did? well too late, im in your base!... you took him out huh? well you cant stop my siege weapons from destroying your cast- FUuuuuuu, no matter i my armies will kill - .... ffs"

if he only had shut up...

also @ the tyrael thing. This may come across as racist, but when me and my friends first played we were on skype togheter and when my friend found out who the stranger was he shouted out : HOLY SHIT TYRAEL IS A NEGRO! needless to say, i lost my shit and fell over laughing at the sudden outburst.
ot tho, i loved the twist, and leah being turned into diablo really got to me, so i have to say at least thats a plus for blizz?

What story? None of the games had a decent story . . . .. The first one had a laughable story, the 2nd one had about 10 paragraphs of story and now all the sudden people think the story sucks hard in the 3rd installment?! LoL the story sucked before blizzard even had control of the diablo franchise. LuLz As a matter of FACT blizzard has never given a video game a good story. . . . (aside from SNES Justice League fighting game from the late 90s, which was EPICCCCCC). I never even noticed it. I just like to watch their epic CGI sequences, because they look so damn awesome.

Diablo and story? Read the books for story/lore; play the game for loot!

The story in Diablo 1 and 2 might not have been spectacular, but nobody made the comparison to a kids cartoon villain like they do with the Diablo 3 dialogues.

I have to agree with Beazy. At a distance Blizzard has some pretty cool stories, and close up they have some awesome character arcs, but if you try to examine them close up (or worse, apply whatever you were told makes "good" and "bad" writing) they don't really hold up to scrutiny. If anything I thought D3 was one of their better efforts.

That isn't to say I don't enjoy the lore, but it's only there as a vehicle to drive along the game and give us awesome cut-scenes.

Akara: "Our mental discipline is matched only by our skill in archery... I only hope these are enough to withstand this awful trial."

Tyreal, Izual: "Tyreal was a fool to have trusted me! You see, it was I who told Diablo and his brothers about the soulstones, and how to corrupt them. It was I who helped the Prime Evils mastermind their own exile to your world. The plan we set in motion so long ago cannot be stopped by any mortal agency. Hell, itself, is poised to spill forth into your world like a tidal wave of blood and nightmares. You and all your kind... are doomed."

I dunno. I read the second quote in my head, using the voice of Skeletor instinctively.
