Not to discredit anyone or anything, but being locked up for 5 days for the simple reason of not signing a ticket seems highly unlikely to me.

Noone said it should be "shocking" and just because you hold such a low regard for life, doesn't mean others do, When someone gets put in jail for 5 days, and then reappears crazy and naked, then dies, people want to know wtf happened.

I would say it depends on which jail he was sent to. Some of the jails in America are death sentences for anyone who goes there for whatever reason. Getting a fever sounds pretty reasonable if he went to one of those jails.
