This thought crossed my mind today when a friend & I chatted about what possible new abilities for players or npc's, could the devs conjure up as we continue this long strange journey through Azeroth & beyond. I thought about abilities I had seen in other games that haven't crept their way into WoW yet & this one ability debuff rather, came to mind. In the MMO City of Heroes there was a debuff that reduced the range of the afflicted target's abilities (aka: -Range) by X # of yards for Y # of seconds.
Just like in WoW, specific classes had access to this debuff & others didn't. The -range debuff sometimes was the ability itself or it was baked into an attack (ex: Mortal Strike). Some classes could reduce the range more than others. It added a very interesting variable to both PvP & PvE encounters. Since I was mostly a PvP guy I can speak best to it's implications in that setting. For melee it was a great tool to shorten the gap between ranged players that would otherwise attempt to kite them indefinitely. For lining up kills in PvP it was a clutch debuff to apply on the healer just before spiking the kill target. It also was an invaluable tool for peeling ranged enemies off of your teammates.
As more flavors of the same core types of abilities are introduced with every expansion we are reaching a point where class homogenization is becoming a thing. I would argue it already exists & is a side effect of having too many abilities in our spell book. But I digress..
Adding a -range debuff mechanic to WoW probably isn't original, may not "fit", or isn't possible right now with WoW's current tech, but I know it was a fun, meaningful, & valuable tool for players in City of Heroes. What do you guys think?
Bonus question: What other types of abilities haven't been added as player abilities in WoW that you would like to see? Either from other WoW npc's or other games? I know I have heard Lei Shen's lightning whip mentioned in the shaman forums a few times.
Edit: Since there seems to be some confusion surrounding the topic of my post I am going to borrow an example from the user Radio who posted further down the page.
Example player abilities (not saying these are balanced or feasible, just examples of the mechanic):
Code:Monk: Foggy Brew Poison 60 sec cooldown 30 energy (5% mana) 40 yard range The monk douses the target in a Foggy Brew, lowering the target's maximum range on all abilities to by 50% for 6 seconds.Code:: Off-Balance (passive) The force of the warrior's special attacks cause the target to be off-balance for 5 seconds, while your target is off-balance, their maximum range on all abilities is reduced to 30 yards. Abilities with a range of less than 30 yards are not affected.
