    question about my cpu overheating

    hello mmochamps,

so a while ago due to my own non proper computer care, my gpu has kinda broken down and im looking to replace it with a geforce 660 ti, but i remain having my computer on with the half broken gpu i have atm. I left my computer on over night once and later the next day my computer wouldnt load any programs. so shutdown and restart and it shows me in a bios screen the overheating of my cpu? can a non fully functioning gpu cause the cpu to overheat like this?

should i also get a heat sink fan and thermal paste when i buy my new graphics card? or will just replacing the bad graphics card fix this? it should also be noted that i dont overclock.

    thank you for any help.

also i was wondering why these two card (seemlingly the same) have a 30$ difference, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121656 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127696

    i5 2500k cpu
    560ti gpu
    8g ram
    650w psu
    asus p8p67 motherboard

Get a monitoring program such as http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html and see what your temps actually are. Also plz include your specs.

The MSI card has a higher core frequency.

im dl'ing that program, did you wish to see what the temps are, or just giving to me for possible future uses? thanks for the link though.

wanted you to see what your current temps are

the 0-3 cores go from 37-43 C and the gpu is 35 C

    with no games running

That's not terrible for idling as i assume your using the stock heat sink. Whats wrong with your 560ti? I have never heard of a graphics card causing a CPU to overheat. I guess if the card is literally going super nova and putting out a ton of heat it could raise the ambient temps of the case enough to make the cpu overheat but that would probably destroy the rest of your computer as well.

ya im using the stock, and well im not too entirely sure whats wrong with it, but it seems like half of it just stopped working. and i thought it was causing the cpu to overheat just since with the state the gpu is in when im running games like minecraft or WoW, diablo or w/e it could just put more strain on the cpu i suppose? im teh big nub with computers.

during games i know the sound level increases alot way more then the normal noise level it used to be at, this is either from the cpu fan or gpu fan. and during the intial boot up on my computer the 1 of the gpu fans is groans very heavily for a min or so.

I've never seen a GPU cause a CPU to overheat in 20 yrs of building computers.

The difference in the 2 cards is in the core and and boost clock speeds. Look under details. The MSI clocks higher hence means it's "better". Either one is pretty good. You could snag the Asus and slightly bump the core to meet the MSi quite easily with no issues.

Is your Heatsink clogged? Could just be one hell of coincidence.

I would open a game and do something for a bit and then switch to that program and see what your temps are. Also it should show the RPM on your graphics card's fan as well and post em in here. Look at the MAX column in that program and post those numbers btw.

CPU- high 80's to mid 90's C for the cores
    sys fan-950 rpm
    cpu fan-1950 rpm
    aux fan-650 rpm
    aux fan-600 rpm

    GPU- 72 C 3200 rpm

80-90s is really high for a non overclocked CPU. The GPU is fine and happy at 72c. But your CPU..... I would see if its attached good to your cpu or if its full of dust or something. And if you do end up getting the 660ti I would recommend getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103099 at the same time. Comes with thermal paste and everything.
