It has coil whine in my bottom PCI slot, and doesn't when in my top PCI slot. Not sure why.

OT: 9800GT will work for emergencies.

May be because the lower PCI-E is running 4x or 8x.

    What motherboard do you have?

ASUS Striker 680i. If I remember correctly it's a frankensteined board containing the NB of the 780.

As I said, 6 years old. Need a new one really, but this is my first build.

This hot beauty? (Sarcasm on the complete crazy combination of colors from back before they thought computer nerds cared.)

By the sounds of it, the PCI-E lane may just be dying, as it is a full 16x slot. The top or middle should be fine.

It looks similar. I can CPU-Z to find out, probably.

It's already got two dead SATA ports.

Every time you have a question that begins with "Why?" that is about what other people prefer to do with their own goddamn time, come back here, and reread the first row of this post. That will ALWAYS be the answer to your question. Have a nice day.

Hmmm, this makes me wonder how my old SLI 9600GT setup will run modern games :P

To bad I have my second card at my parents.

lol oh dear. Might be time to replace it. :P Course, then again, to get more SATA ports, you can just get a PCI/PCI-E card. ^_^

I only need four of the six: three HDDs and an optical. New Mobo means new PC as I'd need a new CPU.

My home comp still has a 9800 GT, and it handled all of Cataclysm pretty well. That said, it's really starting to struggle with anything new, even on low settings, so consider it an emergency card and save up for something new.

until recently I was running a HD 4850 1gb with most settings around medium. I believe it was comparable to a 9800gtx+. You could probably run wow on two 9800gt's but you'd probably have settings on the low end.

Well, yes, and obviously that would be a task. Also, new RAM. Since DDR2 is way out of date, also is more expensive than DDR3. :P
