Will a long Ethernet cord affect me?

    Hello

Okay so this is something that has been boggling me for a bit, will a long Ethernet cord have any differences as opposed to a short one? In my case, a 5ft vs a 50 ft cord. connection wise

Moving into a new place, and am basing this off of if I should claim my throne in the room with the Modem or a different room using the long cable, however if long cables are known to have some sorta side affect for connections, Ill prob just park and use the small cord

Depends on the quality of the cable, i'm 3 floors above my modem using an ethernet cable and i seem to have the same speeds and ping as downstairs.

ethernet cord caps at 1Gbps if im not mistaken so it shouldn't have any effect on your speed

    should be fine.

Considering how far your data has travelled before it arrives in your ethernet cable... NO.

With that small length you will have no problems. You'll only start having problems after about 100m, or 328ft.

A long cord will affect your connection speed but only at something like 100 meters(roughly 300 feet) so you would be fine at just 50 feet.

50 feet is roughly 15 meters. You are fine, that's really not any distance worth talking about

It only becomes an issue at excessive lengths. Typically ~100 meters is the longest you can reliably stretch a typical Cat 5 cable without the need of a switch/repeater.

anything 250' + needs a signal booster. Your fine .

ethernet cables cap at certain speeds depending on the grade:

    CAT5: 10/100 Mbps
    CAT5E: 1Gbps
    CAT6: 1-10Gbps

all of these cables have a max range of 100 meters or 300 feet, after that you will start getting lower throughput and higher latency

100m is just the specification :P You can run CAT5E or CAT6 (probably not CAT5) well up to ~150m no problem if for some reason you need to.

Big exception is Cat6 in 10Gbit, where the permissible length is cut in half pretty much.

Real answer, 50 feet isn't going to do jack to the connection compared to 5 feet.

FYI, 100 meters is more than 300 feet. :P
    1 yard = 3 feet.
    1 meter = ~3.3 feet.

    Don't believe me? I'm holding a meter stick. :P

i know, but 300 is close enough

iirc you can expect slow downs if longer than 100 meters, so you'll be fine
