    Upgrade Help plz

    Hey folks, my current specs:

    Win7 64bit
    Radeon 7770
    8gb 1333hz
    i7-870
    650watt Corsair PSU

I was all ready to buy a new PC. This current one was bought in summer of 2009 except for the GPU and PSU which I upgraded right when the 7770 came out. BUT, funds for my new PC had to go somewhere else, which I'm not pleased about, but that's life, nothing I can do. Family comes first. So, I'm going to upgrade my current PC as best I can to be able to play the new MMO's that are coming out this next 12-18 months on high or max settings.

I'm guessing I need a new GPU, Mobo and Processor at least. I'll also need a new case, because the current case I literally had to hacksaw out a little to make space for the 7770 which was quite a bit bigger than the 5770 that was there before. If I need something else, plz, I would love the suggestions/input. I've never bought a case before, so if someone could point me to a case that I can use for years to come, that would be great.

    Thanks folks.

*** One more question, is upgrading to Win8 worth it?

I'm thinking like $500 at the most, but the cheaper the better.

    $350 will get a 3570K
    $400 will get a 4670K

That would leave about $100 for the case. I would save some money and upgrade the GPU later. Upgrading from a 7770 right now won't net a large performance in MMOs

Would it be smart to get package deal from Newegg, the processor/mobo, thing?

Depends on the package and price.

What I would probably do is upgrade the gpu first with a 760. And later on, when you have some more cash upgrade the cpu/mobo (im assuming you have DDR3 Ram)

But than you could go for something like this

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Microcenter)
    Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($127.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($255.66 @ Newegg)
    Total: $583.64
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
    (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-07-03 03:51 EDT-0400)

If you want it all, you could get this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Microcenter)
    Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($127.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB Video Card ($172.98 @ SuperBiiz)
    Total: $500.96
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
    (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-07-03 03:52 EDT-0400)

And if you dont want to OC, you can get this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($159.99 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: MSI B85M-G43 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($255.66 @ Newegg)
    Total: $495.64
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
    (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-07-03 04:15 EDT-0400)

If that is to much, you could drop the GPU down to a 660. But you will quite some performance in the GPU deparment.

    Edit:

Hmmm, missed the part about the case. Than it is probably better to get cpu/mobo/case now, and save up for a new gpu. Altho, I think your cpu should be ok. So another option would be case/gpu upgrade.

Sweet thanks, I really like the 3rd option as I don't want to try and OC anything. I could tell many stories about things I've tried to do with PC's in the past and had a .00001% chance that it might fail or blow up, and it would blow up just because my luck is that bad with stuff like that.

Either way, thanks so much for this write up. A Case would be the last thing I know I need to get.

Keep in mind... Those prices for Microcenter are In Store Only... so unless you have one nearby (probably not), those will be $30-40 more... That, and the first two choices are pointless without a good aftermarket cooler, adding another $30-60 on there.

That aftermarket cooler can always be bought later

I didnt account for the need of a case tho. The third option was 530 dollars on pcpartpicker, but you could get a cheaper motherboard I guess. A case could be 30-50 dollars. I like corsair cases myself, they tend to be a bit pricier. Cheapest is 50 dollar, but it should last a couple of builds. So a final build could be:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI B85M-G43 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($87.55 @ Newegg)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($255.66 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $593.19
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
    (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-07-03 05:34 EDT-0400)

I put it all to neweg, to make it easier. The case seems be some kind of combo deal, normally its 70 dollar. If that deal is over you could get the 200r.
So what you could do is, get the cpu/mobo/case now and the gpu later on. Or if you play anything else besides MMOs, it might be worth it to get the gpu/case now and the mobo/cpu later.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll definitely be able to get higher stuff than I had thought I would. Good to know.

One more question I just thought of, is upgrading to Win8 worth it? (I'll put this as an EDIT at the top also since I'm pulling this up from a few days ago)

If you have XP or Vista? Yes. If you have Win7? No.
