Cool How much gold to get Engineering to 600?

Right now my Hunter has Blacksmithing and Mining (both 600). I'm keen on replacing the latter with Engineering, as it has a few perks useful to my Hunter (namely the Synapse gloves enchant). How much gold, on average, would I need to get Engineering to 600 as fast as possible?

    Depends on server

Going to vary greatly by server. The best you could do to find out is to google a guide from 1-600, that should have all the mats required, and then you can just search the AH and add it up.

If I had to shoot a random guess out there though, I'd say between 7000 and 12000.

    This seems about right.

Doing an excel spreadsheet, Cost Per Unit * Unit Count based off the US-Alliance market price for the WoW-Professions 1-600 Engineering guide gave me:

    Classic: 2031G
    BC: 1469G
    WOTLK: 2059G
    Cata: 2514G
    MoP: 873G
    Total: ~8950G

Not including trainer fee's or missed skill-ups and using the spirit of harmony method for engineering rather than Ghost Iron Bars method.

I just did the 1-550 grind for the synapse springs (Also on barth horde)

It cost me just over 1k, but i supplied just about all the mats myself (had to buy a few pita ones like elementium ore that i just cbf farming)

Also protip: Cobalt ore is 1:1 for bars, not 2:1

I'm just here to complain, if I'm being honest

Well yeah, if you farm the mats yourself it's pretty cheap, but let's face it most people are lazy :P

I don't feel like raising another alt to do stuff for my main.

So I'll have my main (the Hunter) gather up what is needed and then have her train in Engineering.

My advice farm alot of mats by urself. Cause i paid like 40k for my engi.

On my high pop server it took about 6k buying 95% of the mats from 1-600 from the AH.

Definitely don't buy for it if you're on low pop.

I decided to switch to eng 3 day ago, from mining. It took around 4k gold and about 5 hours, between farming/buying/skilling. My advice, even though it's too late, is to take the list of mat needed from TarouWoWguides (be carefull because in the list elementium ore is missing and you need it) for examples and buy the cheap mats. Go farm the expensive one. I bought the most of the mat except Cobalt, Saronite, Obsidium, Elementium, Ghost Iron. If you can, farm a lot of ghost iron and make bars, you will need it.

I leveled 1-600 just a few days ago on Frostmane-EU where I bought all the mats.
It came to about 4.500g in total, so I'ts quite cheap!

Just leveled Engineering and Mining on an 90 alt. Mining took like <8 hours ( 2 evenings ). But during leveling mining I didn't got a lot of low level ores because I mainly did it in MoP area ( u can mine from lvl 1 in Pandaria ). Of course the ideea was to supply with my mining mats for engineering, so after I went back to low level areas and provided for free >90% of mats needed for engineering. Was it boring ? Yes / no because I got to fly again through most areas of the game. But also it took a lot of time, some 10+ hours. Maybe I was also unlucky, but in Northrend had to fly a lot to find nodes, maybe because it was during the early morning and I guess nodes respawn might be related to number of players online. And this was on a major server. Otherwise it would of costed me for sure over 10k, since a stack of iron ghost bars goes for over 100g and elementium bars aroung 200g.

Cost me about 5-6k on a medium pop server; the expensive part was the extras for Jeeves. Factoring those in, it was closer to 10k total. Way better than the 450-525 "grind" I endured in Cata that cost double that (ore is a seller's market at beginning of an expansion, yet I was buying...silly me).

Most of engineering recipies are made from mats you can get by mining.
Leveled engineering almost free to 600.

Didn't even have any money to buy mats, cause i just rerolled on a new server with that char.

Yeah if you get on it, you can level engi through mining in less than a day. Better spend that gold on mats for the fantastic mount coming up in 5.4

    EDIT:

Every single time I make this mistake. Every. Single. Time.

    Thats far from free.
If you use lets say 5 stacks of copper bars that value at 50g/stack (just making up numbers) to level up but you mined em yourself you still spend 250g on leveling.
Just because you farmed the mats on an alt doesn't mean the mats didnt have a value.
