seeing as how they put a lot of effort into cramming the storyline down players' throats, making sure you knew YOU were THE HERO in every zone you went to (as you did every single quest in their order every time, etc), etc., and in general treating their playerbase like they are expected to not understand anything more subtle than a comic book, the idea that they HAD to put the big bad dragon on the load screen kinds of fits. presumably someone thought this would 'engage' some subset of players or potential players more who were otherwise too dense to be intrigued by such a dark screen they originally had.
the canned screen fits the theme of the first 2 screens and honestly would have been a very dark and attractive thing to look at periodically over 20 months.
Authors I have enjoyed enough to mention here: JRR Tolkein, Poul Anderson,Jack Vance, Glen Cook, Brian Stableford, MAR Barker, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, John Steakley, Joe Abercrombie, Robert Silverberg, the norse sagas, CJ Cherryh, PG Wodehouse, Clark Ashton Smith, Alastair Reynolds, Cordwainer Smith, LE Modesitt, L. Sprague de Camp & Fletcher Pratt, Agatha Christie, Steven Erikson & Ian Esslemont, Stephen R Donaldon, and recently Jack L Chalker.
