Ever changed your mind about a game after replaying it? (In a positive way)

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if maybe I missed more games which were so bad for the first 30mins/hour that they made me rage-uninstall them. (while they were actually pretty decent/amazing games)

Last week I had a discussion with a friend and during it we both were raging about how Lionhead totally ruined the Fable series, Fable 1 being one of our favourite games ever. I quit Fable 2 within the hour, he actually finished it but didn't really like it.
When Fable 3 came out I just couldn't help myself and bought it hoping they didn't screw it up like Fable 2. Well, after playing for 1 hour again I got really frustrated because guess what...it was even MORE tedious than Fable 2 , with a horrible menu and the removing of the coloured XP etc etc.

Now last week I had nothing to do, being not in the mood to level one more of my god-knows-how-many WoW-alts, I decided to play Fable 2 (played 1 enough) and actually finish it this time and then move onto Fable 3, no matter how bored I might possibly get, actually playing my 60E games for once.
So 2 weeks later I finally finished 3, yes the first hour of Fable 3 was horrible yet again, but after that wow, I can say I thoughrougly loved every second of it and wouldn't have wanted to miss any of it. I'm not gonna spoil here but have you ever watched a movie/game/series and after the ending thought..."what happens NOW? How will they rebuild earth ? How will he rule his people now? How will the people deal with this new chance?" Well I finally got to play that part as well, evolving the world a bit, not having the "Gz ur the winner, CY@~kkthxye" treatment felt really good. The final few hours were also one of the most immersive things I've played. (Bit like Mass effect, dragon age 1, etc ).

There are of course many things I loved/disliked but this isn't only about Fable 3 and I realise some/a lot of people just dislike this game. But this just made me realise how important the first few moments of a game are (at least to me) and wonder how I could've been so rash as to completely quit the series after just a horrible intro.

So yeah tldr version; ever came back to a game and thought, this is actually quite good?

Played EVE online in 2009, couldn't get into it because it was too complicated and strange.

Then, in 2012, after having watched every single Star Trek and Stargate Atlantis episode, and having converted to Sci-Fi fictionism, I retried EVE. Believe me when I say this: it's not complicated enough. It's my second most played game right now.

Dragon Age I, Skyrim, Darksiders, and Assassin's Creed. All of these gave me problems initially (sometimes technical, sometimes related to gameplay), but I eventually came back to them.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see." ― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

In a positive way - maybe. Fable 2 comes to mind. When I tried it first, I was unimpressed and put it away after an hour. At one point my GF left for a weekend and I got bored, so I tried it again - couldn't put it down for 8 hours straight. Still never finished it though. A lot more often, it's the other way around - something that looks like a promising game ends in disappointment, usually due to inevitable Third Act Collapse. It's common in movies, but even more common in games where, it seems, there's never enough time or money by the end. I think maybe they should start making games from the conclusion - because beginning is the easiest.

    Deus Ex HR.

First time I played it, I didn't like it, stopped about half an hour in.

Gave it a second chance, and I loved it.

Morroiwnd took me a few tries to get into, and it is now firmly cemented as my all time favorite.

Have to say, that's never happened to me. If I dislike a game I'll never play it again, didn't like it once, see no reason to force myself to like it later.

On the other hand, I've played games from my past recently and been like "Wow, I used to like this game? This game is terrible."

Well, for me so many people kept saying it was such a great game (DE:HR) that I decided to give it another go about a month or two later.

I have to say the same about Deus Ex, the first 5 hours of playing it felt boring and tedious, then my dad came along and used my steam account, wanted to try deus ex and fucked up my cloud savefile, decided to give it a go a while ago and I have to admit I fell in love with it.

Yeah, but usually for the worse. I've whipped out several old PS1/2 games for the nostalgia and it killed my memories of them. >.<

Though eh, things like Shadow of the Colossus were better the second and third time.

Final Fantasy VIII. I just didn't like it when I first played it. Maybe I was still too into VII and didn't want it to be good, but I just finished playing it again, and wow it's an amazing game.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. When I first played it I thought it was a bad game. I hated it, reminded me too much of finial fantasy with stopping and picking what abilities to use (I was young at the time).
About a few months later I was bored and tried it again. To this day I hold that game as the greatest game I will ever play, well equal to Dragon Age Origins.

I've given Eve a couple of tries, well more than a couple, and I just can't seem to get in the game. I like their direction and design but its just too bloated and complicated.

There are just so many things to keep track of and even after doing the tutorial it wasn't easy finding my way around.

League of Legends was one of the recent games that when playing it first I found it boring. However, after giving it another shot I have to say the play style is pretty addictive.

But the game design when it comes to queues and the toxic community makes the game unplayable.

I cannot think of a single game I have not liked and then replayed and liked.
Games I have hated would include
    Zelda 2
    Army of 2
    Oblivion
Crysis 2- hate games with unlimited spawning enemies becausei like to clear an area then move forward. Also the stealth feature promoted just sneaking past enemies vs fighting. This game was also dumb enough to checkpoint me seconds away from dying and it was impossible to continue.

I pretty much stick to games I know I will like or the same sequels to games I do like.

Give Smite a try, the community seems much more grounded.

OT: Didn't care for Battlefield 3 at release, picked it up a month ago and I'm loving it.

Yep, I despised Final Fantasy IX the first time I played it. I don't know why, but I couldn't get into it. Now it is one of my favorite games ever. Same with X and XII to be honest, still kinda on the fence about XII but I certainly like it now as opposed to hate it.

Your opinions and interests change over time. I think I was just a super FFVIII fan girl and pissed they changed stuff. I'm older now and can appreciate different games more than I could when I was younger.

So it seems Deus Ex is the game of second chances, eh?

the first Darksiders, played it for a few hours, didn't get into it so I shelved it for like 2 years, then one day I started to play it again and loved it.

-Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars: This game baffles me. I got it for cheap at a store chain that was going out of business with no real awareness at the time that it even existed. I really thought the game dragged on forever with its intermission scenes between maps and I felt like it was a poor mans Advance Wars at the time. I stopped playing it for a while and then months later picked it up and even though I dont even remember the storyline hardly I still became absorbed with the game for some reason and felt sad when I had finally beaten it.

Glover was another game I remember not really liking to much when it came out even though it looked creative, but after playing it a few years after its release it did grow on me.

There's more I just cant think of them right now.

As for a series that I didn't really like at first (even though I had high hopes) which got better for me after playing the sequels: Hyperdimension Neptunia. Was really disappointed with the first game, but the 2nd and 3rd fixed a vast majority of the problems I had(combat, music, dumb as fuck DLC) and made them really more enjoyable.

What I still after years have not been able to really get into after countless times trying to replay, but hope some day I can finally appreciate: Secret of Mana. I just cant get into it. Every time I play it I just feel like playing Terranigma instead which I feel was a far superior game. SoM's sequel was better, but I still think Enix did a better job then Square with their action RPG series on the SNES.
