Oclus Rift - Why all the hype ?

Personally i don't really get it, to me it just seems like 2 really small mointors placed really close to your eyes.

So can anyone explain to me the appeal of this ? It just seems like another stupid gimmick or are there some features i am unware of ?

It gives you 3D while blocking out all other light, meaning it will look like your ordinary field of vision. Wich is for games and movies pretty damn cool.

Have you ever been in one of huge virtual reality machines in an arcade or dave and busters type place? This is supposed to be a full imersion into games and movies. It's like having one of those huge machines in your house that everyone can afford and enjoy multiple games.

For those who don't know about the Oculus Rift:

Also tons of youtube videos available.

Ahhh a portable VR machine. Okay, makes more sense now.

As long as they don't come with a 360° treadmill and support full body movement, I'm not going to buy it. I don't feel like controlling "myself" with a joystick.

It will offer a ton of immersion, playing Skyrim with it would be amazing honestly. Sure, it looks big and clunky, but that's the case with pretty much every prototype. If it takes off, we will see way smaller and lighter versions in the future, that you might not even notice you're wearing. You can call it a gimmick if you want, but it's a miles better one than motion controls.

    To the poster above me.

    The Oculus Rift VR.

the reason it is better is when you are looking at your monitor now and you turn your head your monitor stays still, and your character only turns on the screen with the input of a mouse. With the Oculus when you turn your head the screen moves aswell to give you a field of vision, it also blocks out everything OUTside of the game, thus putting your entire head within the HUD.

Imagine playing an FPS and instead of having to turn left to right with a control, instead you just turn your head to look in the direction you wanted to see. Imagine also having the Crosshair of the gun directly in the centre of your eyes, so where you looked straight is where the gun shot.

It opens up a completely new and exciting way to play games. Since you aren't just controlling the character with your hands, you are actually the face of your character.
Bow down before our new furry overlords!

Hmmm the character moving with you sounds pretty cool, Guess its just not for me though, i like to sit back and chill out when playing. And obvious i'm really paranoid about my eyes so that probably doesn't help my opinion of it either.

...not how its gonna be used in games.

lets say you are playing a flight sim or a game where you pilot a vehicle from the first person view.

now instead of looking at the screen the GUI and the view screen will be right in front of you, while you control the game through which ever controller your using.

personally, i'm hoping to get some use out of my flight stick finally.

Haha yea, there's still much to perfect though. I don't see how you could crouch in that thing, and you definitely won't be able to roll even if the game allows it.

Apparently designers who worked on games like Call of Duty, Lost Planet, Planetside 2, etc.. are working on an erotic adventure game for Oculus Rift called Wicked Paradise. http://wickedparadise.com/ Instead of reading about or watching a character on a sexual escapade, you'll be able to become that character with this game ....
Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I've ever known.

Why there is a hype... because every person who tests them says it's amazing?
Active WoW player Jan 2006 - Aug 2020
    Occasional WoW Classic Andy since.
Nothing lasts forever, as they say.
But at least I can casually play Classic and remember when MMORPGs were good.
