San Francisco plane crash: TV station duped into giving racist, false names of pilots

I can't believe this actually happened. How clueless must people be in order for this to make it on the air?

KTVU Reports Racist Joke As Names Of Asiana 214 Pilots

On Friday, Bay Area Fox affiliate KTVU told viewers the purported names of the pilots on Asiana Flight 214.

The problem was that the names — "Sum Ting Wong," "Wi Tu Lo," "Ho Lee Fuk" and "Bang Ding Ow" — were obviously fake. The news anchor read the names off the teleprompter and didn't bat an eye, adding that the information had been confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Except the NTSB stated they don't give out the pilots' names during investigations. So, have fun trying to explain how you got trolled so hard.

    1. How the hell was the station dumb enough to fall for this
    2. Whoever the prankster is, is a genius, this is hilarious. Not because of the racism or the puns, but because it's so stupid that it actually worked.

That's what I'd like to know. "Fox affiliate" doesn't begin to suffice.

It's not necessarily obvious until you say them out loud. It contains enough real ("Wong" and "Lo" are highly common surnames. "Wi" is a common given name) to seem plausible.

Warning : Above post may contain snark and/or sarcasm. Try reparsing with the /s argument before replying.

They seem pretty obvious in print.

    This just popped up though:

This incident happened days after station made a web promo hyping its crash coverage:

“This past weekend viewers flocked to KTVU Channel 2 News for coverage of the tragic crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

KTVU Channel 2 News owned this breaking news story with a number of firsts!

    - First on-air.
    - First on-line.
    - First with alerts to mobile devices.
    - First on Twitter & Facebook.
    - First with aerial shots from KTVU NewsChopper 2.
    - First with a live reporter from the scene.
    - First live interview with anyone connected to someone on the flight.

(KTVU news director Lee) Rosenthal is quoted in the promo: “Being first on air and on every platform in all aspects of our coverage was a great accomplishment, but being 100% accurate, effectively using our great sources and social media without putting a single piece of erroneous information on our air, is what we are most proud of as a newsroom.”
    That's rather priceless.

Someone, somewhere managed to pull this off. Can you imagine how awesome it must be to be him right now?

I dunno, i find it kind of funny to imagine a news crew rolling up to a crashed airplane, jumping out of their news van and going "FIRST BITCHES, SUCK ON THAT!" but maybe that's just me...

Indeed. Local news teams love to exaggerate their value though.

I was actually just imagining Ron Burgandy in a news van street race to the crash scene.
