What is the system being used for, exactly, if not gaming?
    Gaming: Dual Intel Pentium III Coppermine @ 1400mhz + Blue Orb | Asus CUV266-D | GeForce 2 Ti + ZF700-Cu | 1024mb Crucial PC-133 | Whistler Build 2267
    Media: Dual Intel Drake Xeon @ 600mhz | Intel Marlinspike MS440GX | Matrox G440 | 1024mb Crucial PC-133 @ 166mhz | Windows 2000 Pro

Nothing really. Last computer he had was a Dell. It had bad air flow, got hot, and I think low ram. I realize is a bit over kill... But as long as everything will fit and is compatible. It's good

Just seems like a lot of power for using facebook, when something 'just as good' could be had for a fair bit less.

What would you recommend? I guess I can tell him both options...and let him choose.

    Don't forget the operating system.

Also, if it's for a non-gamer, I'd have recommend an APU setup and you can ditch about $100 off that price (and there you have your $100 for windows if you're going that route).

Yea I already got the os. Sorry what's apu? I just suspect he won't go for a cheaper machine. He thinks if he pays more, it will last longer.

Really no need for a higher setup, or a GPU.

    Motherboard: ASRock B75M-DGS R2.0 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($54.98 @ SuperBiiz)
    Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($54.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: Antec 450W ATX12V Power Supply ($38.18 @ Amazon)
    Optical Drive: LG GH24NS95 DVD/CD Writer ($14.94 @ Newegg)
    Total: $478.04

If you really want a card for HDMI play or something, just a cheapy will do
Video Card: Galaxy GeForce GT 610 1GB Video Card ($27.98 @ Newegg)
    Gaming: Dual Intel Pentium III Coppermine @ 1400mhz + Blue Orb | Asus CUV266-D | GeForce 2 Ti + ZF700-Cu | 1024mb Crucial PC-133 | Whistler Build 2267

If it's not going to be used for gaming, you're wasting a lot of money on hardware you don't need.

Something like this from Marest's builds would be more than enough.

    Family/Office/Entry 320

    MoBo: ASRock FM2A55M-DGS – $49.99
    CPU: AMD A8-5600K – $99.99
    RAM: G.Skill 1600MHz 2x2GB – $37.99
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB – $59.99
    PSU: Cooler Master Elite 400/460 – $39.99
    Case: Antec VSK-4000 – $34.99
    --------------------------------------------------
    Estimated Total Price – $323

If your friends decides later he wants to game a little, you can add a decent GPU for under $100 and be in good shape.

Would the micro mobo be able to be connected to all the Ports of the case?

Yarp. The only real difference is less RAM slots and PCI-E slots but... you dont really need more than one anyway.

An apu basically a CPU and GPU in one. I just build a complete machine for a friend with the A10-5800K for $500 and that included a copy of Windows 7 Home. He plays Skyrim, Neverwinter and SWTOR at 720 at around 60 frames. I haven't personally seen it perform but he loves it.

Note that you want faster memory if you go that route. I think i went with 8 gig of 1866 MHz.

So I can just take my current setup

    1. CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($120 )
    2. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($65)

    10. Optical Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner ($20 @Newegg)
    Total: $658

And replace cpu with (AMD A10-6800K Richland 4.1GHz (4.4GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 100W Quad-Core Desktop Processor - Black Edition AMD Radeon HD 8670D) and get rid of the video card and all is well?

Faster memory, nor an A10, would be needed for what he's doing.

You'd need an FM2 motherboard as well. I honestly still think it's overkill by a good 100-200 bucks, but it ain't my money :P
