In-depth Timeless Isle Hidden Chest Guide

    Timeless Isle Chests
By Simca with assistance from Tziva

This is the more in-depth version of the Timeless Isle Chest Map/Guide that I wrote for the front page. The map on the front page is a slight oversimplification - it includes all the chests, but it doesn't explain exactly how they all work as well. In this expanded version I will cover the details of the looting mechanisms of the chests, include a step-by-step guide with TomTom macros, and a long list at the end for use by TomTom users who also run Paste. I expect this guide will primarily be used by the following three groups of people:
    • People who want to get an advantage on the day of the patch release
    • People who are doing it for the n-th time on their alts
    • People who are having trouble finding one last chest (It took me 3 hours to find the last three chests I was missing, and the process involved a hex editor, Paint.NET, and a protractor.)

    Why are these chests important?
One of the chests on the map below (marked with a 7) contains a Burden of Eternity, which you can use to obtain an itemlevel 535 item. Additionally, you can fill out all of your specs with itemlevel 496 gear; you will receive a ton of it following this guide/map. Check out last week's Monday post for more details on Timeless Isle Armor.

These chests are linked to achievements as well. Finding all of the 'one-time' chests (all of the chests on the map marked with numbers) will net you the achievement Treasure, Treasure Everywhere. If you loot both all three pirate-themed Weekly chests, you will receive the achievement Where There's Pirates, There's Booty, and you can receive the achievement Extreme Treasure Hunter for getting the other three chests, which all require platforming.

What loot do I get from these chests, exactly?
I will cover that in the legend below. First, it appears that the loot from chests is catered mostly if not entirely to your spec/class, so you will only find Leather tokens on a Rogue from these chests. Mobs do not have the same rules, so they can drop any kind of BoA armor type. Also, know that the asterisks in the legend mean that the first chest you open of that 'chest type' will contain additional loot. For example, the first "Tier 1 Group 1" chest you open will -always- contain an epic, even though finding epic tokens normally is pretty rare for a "Tier 1 Group 1" chest. This "first chest of its kind gets more loot" rule is the reason that the map/legend here is slightly more complicated than the front page's version. On the front page, I made the groups up by common sense. In this thread, I will use the groups that Blizzard uses.
    • All non-"W" chests can only be looted once per toon!
    • Tier 1 Group 1 ("1")*: These chests are located on the north-west/west coast of the Timeless Isle and have the name "Moss-Covered Chest". They contain a very small amount of Timeless Coins and can sometimes contain an epic token.
    • Tier 1 Group 2 ("2")*: These chests are located on the south-west/south coast of the Timeless Isle and have the name "Moss-Covered Chest". They also contain a very small amount of Timeless Coins and can sometimes contain an epic token.
    • Tier 1 Group 3 ("3")*: These chests are located near Mossgreen Lake, in Red Stone Run, and in Whispershade Hollow in the middle and middle-eastern parts of the Timeless Isle. They still have the name "Moss-Covered Chest", but their loot is better than the previous groups' loot. They contain a lot more Timeless Coins, but they still appear to have the same (rather low) chance at an epic.
    • Tier 1 Group 4 ("4")*: These chests are located near the bottom of the cliffs north and northeast of Firewalker Ruins in the middle and middle-eastern parts of the Timeless Isle. They still have the name "Moss-Covered Chest". Their loot is the same as Group 3 - not amazing, but significantly better than Group 1 and Group 2.
    • Tier 2 ("5")*: These chests are located in hard to reach places and have many different names. The western two of them are on top of cliffs and only accessible by Albatross. Another two are in caves, and the final one is an area densely populated by deadly frogs. These chests all contain a small amount of Timeless Coins and multiple epic tokens.
    • Tier 3 ("6")*: These chests are located in the middle of groups of Ordos yaungol and have the name "Smouldering Chest". They contain several hundred Timeless Coins and multiple epic tokens.
    • Blazing Chest ("7"): This 'ultimate' chest, the Blazing Chest, is located in the western part of the Ordos Sanctuary and is quite tricky to reach due to the large amount of high-level elites in the area. The chest contains a medium amount of Timeless Coins, a few epic tokens, and a guaranteed Burden of Eternity. This is one of the only ways to obtain a Burden of Eternity that doesn't involve luck, making this chest very important.
    • Weekly ("W"): As the name implies, these chests can be looted once per week, unlike the majority of the island's chests. All of them are in places that require effort to reach. Some are underwater, some require platforming, and one of them even requires a key from nearby mobs. Additionally, they all drop large amounts of Lesser Charms of Good Fortune in addition to a medium amount of Timeless Coins and a possible epic token. The southern-most Weekly chest also will contain a Cursed Swabby Helmet the first time you open it.

    Step-by-Step Guide with TomTom Macros

To use the macros in this guide, you must have TomTom installed. Simply select the text in the "code" block for each section and press CTRL+C, then go into WoW, type /m and hit "New" to create a new macro. Name the macro whatever and leave the icon blank (doesn't matter), and then press CTRL+V in the text box there to paste the code into the macro. Hit save and drag the macro to your bar somewhere and click it. Clicking the macro should add all of the waypoints in that section to your map, and afterwards, you can remove the macro.

    Tier 1 Group 1 ("1")*

Alright, we're going to begin our journey in the NW part of the Timeless Isle, slightly NE of the Horde camp. Pick up all of the chests marked with a "1" on the map above using the waypoint macro below. A few of the sneakier chests include the northernmost "1", which is behind a rock on a very small ledge near the water, and the one directly southwest of that (obscuring the letters in the word "Huojin" on the map), which is located underwater in the middle of several Ancient Spineclaws. Three "1" chests are also located on top of tree stumps, so you may have to zoom your camera back a bit to see them.

    Code:
    /way 25.7, 45.8
    /way 24.8, 53
    /way 22.2, 49.2
    /way 22.4, 35.4
    /way 29.7, 31.7
    /way 30.8, 36.4
    /way 27.4, 39
    /way 25.4, 27
    /way 36.6, 34
    /way 24.8, 38.8
    /way 26, 61.6
    /way 29.8, 31.8

    Tier 1 Group 2 ("2")*

After gathering all of the "1" chests, begin on the "2" chest NW of the Alliance camp. Afterwards, follow the chain of "2" chests along the cliff wall and along the southern shore. Note that three of the chests are in houses in Old Pi'jiu, one is underwater at the base of the docks south of Old Pi'jiu, and one is underneath a Death Adder mob slightly west of Old Pi'jiu.

    Code:
    /way 43.6, 84
    /way 34.8, 84.4
    /way 39.8, 79.6
    /way 38.8, 71.6
    /way 35.4, 76.4
    /way 31, 76.3
    /way 26.8, 68.8
    /way 22.2, 68

    Tier 1 Group 3 ("3")*

Head NE towards Mossgreen Lake from Old Pi'jiu, but make a bit stop along the way at a tree stump near yet another Death Adder mob - the first "3" chest is on top of the tree stump. The next "3" chest is at the bottom of Mossgreen Lake, slightly north of the lake's center. Head straight north from the lake and you will run into another "3", and after that, just walk E/NE as much as possible, hugging the northern cliff wall. You will find all of the remaining "3" chests are near trees or rocks, and all but one are guarded by multiple tigers.

    Code:
    /way 63.8, 59.2
    /way 65.6, 47.8
    /way 58, 50.8
    /way 55.6, 44.4
    /way 51.2, 46
    /way 46.8, 46.8
    /way 47, 53.7
    /way 44.2, 65.2

    Tier 1 Group 4 ("4")*

I've included one of the Group 1 chests in this macro list - the far, far southeast "1". It is extremely inconvenient to get it before now, so I recommend picking it up after you finish with the rest of the "4" chests. All of these chests are pretty obvious, though, like the "3" chests, they are typically surrounded by mobs. They are around the eastern and southern sides of the cliffs, just like the mirror opposite of the "3" chests. Note that the far southeast "1" is in the cargo hold of a sunken ship.

    Code:
    /way 61.6, 88.6 Sunken ship
    /way 52.8, 63
    /way 53, 70.8
    /way 49.8, 65.8
    /way 60.4, 66.2
    /way 65, 75.6

    Tier 2 ("5")*

I recommend starting with the easternmost "5" and moving on from there. It is located in the middle of the Gulp Frogs' area, but their aggro range is low enough that this actually isn't very difficult to get. Even if you die, the graveyard at Whispershade Hollow is very close and you can just corpse run back and resurrect next to the chest.

The next chest is located inside a tiny 1-room cave called the "Mysterious Den". However, it is blocked off by a cave-in. Inside the cave, there is a hammer to break the cave-in, and outside the cave there is a Tattered Note saying to go to the temple grounds and get a weapon. The note is referencing the Timeless Legends that spawn periodically around the Isle. When you find one, use its special ability on the cave-in to destroy it and access the Den. You will summon a rare monster in the process, but you can ignore it if you really want.

The third chest is rather easy. First, enter the "Cavern of Lost Spirits", which is located N/NE of The Celestial Court. Next, just head through the cave a ways and look for it on your left on a rise. It's pretty hard to miss.

The last two chests are best got at the same time. Head to the west entrance to The Celestial Court and look up. Every 30 seconds or so (it varies based on player activity), a Highwind Albatross will pass over this spot, and be within 30 yards for a few seconds (one of the few spots on the Isle where this is true). Throw something at it and then immediately stop attacking. It will pick you up and carry you while it returns to its normal route. To get off, just attack it again and it will start a battle that will end with you being ejected (either dead or alive based on if you win or lose, of course). These Albatrosses fly in the same pattern constantly around the Isle, so don't fear getting stranded - another Albatross will be along shortly (just watch the range). Anyway, the first thing you will pass over is a giant cliff, located NE of the Alliance camp. You will see the chest sticking out plain as day, so attack your bird when it flies over the cliff (don't do it too soon or too late). After getting the chest, tag another Albatross and let it take you away again. This is the long part. The Albatross will carry you all the way around the island in a counterclockwise direction, so after around 5 minutes, you will pass over the cliff NE of the Horde camp, where the final "5" chest is located.

Check out the WoWDB page for Highwind Albatross to see a very accurate display of their flight route. Note that you can currently bypass the need for an Albatross by mounting up in fatigue waters, flying up stupidly high, throwing yourself at the zone-border like an angry bird (which causes you to dismount), and using a Goblin Glider from engineering or the new Golden Glider item available in sets of 5 for 1000 Timeless Coins at The Celestial Court from Ku-Mo.

    Code:
    /way 28.2, 31.2 LONG Albatross ride
    /way 26.6, 65 Short Albatross ride
    /way 46.6, 32.4 Underground
    /way 59.2, 49.4 Behind cave-in
    /way 64.6, 70.2 Gulp Frogs

    Tier 3 ("6")* and Blazing Chest ("7")

As I did once before, I included one of the earlier chests (a "3") in this section instead of its group's section. Why? Because it is in the Ordos Sanctuary, and the only other time you have to go there is right now, of course! But we're getting ahead of ourselves. First, head out due east from Old Pi'jiu towards the Firewalker Ruins. In the main "ruins" section there, you will find your first of the two "6" chests right in the middle of the camp, guarded by a pair of Ordon elites. They aren't too difficult to solo, especially if pulled separately and their abilities are dodged properly, but it may be hard to avoid aggroing all of the other mobs near the chest. Personally, I just threw myself at the chest, used an AoE CC, looted it, and ran screaming. This is a viable strategy for most classes since it can be done with either an AoE CC or an invisibility effect (unstealth/un-invis near the chest and loot it before they can hit you in time). Afterwards, head across the bridge into The Blazing Way, and hit up the other "6" chest in the ruins there, which are located in the NE corner, using the same strategy as the previous chest.

Afterwards, head up to the plateau where the Ordon Sanctuary is located. While entry across the main bridge is a non-option for most users, you can use the Highwind Albatross or Golden Glider as suggested above. Look for the lake on the eastern part of the Ordon Sanctuary - the last "3" chest is next to a small grey statue there.

From this spot, head south to the edge of the cliff (don't jump), and then head west along the outside edge of the Ordon Sanctuary. Attempting to enter the main courtyard of the Ordon Sanctuary without a legendary cloak will teleport back to The Celestial Court, so be careful not to enter the front entrance. After hugging the side for a long while (and either fighting or avoiding a lot of mobs... you can corpse run repeatedly if needed), you will come upon an entrance from the west into the western part of the Ordon Sanctuary. This area is separate from the main courtyard (which contains the world boss Ordos). It contains a few rares and the chest we want. You should see it at the very back, with a Molten Guardian on each side. Simply run up and claim it because the Guardians are just out of aggro range (watch the other mobs, though). Victory!

    Code:
    /way 47, 26.8 Blazing Chest
    /way 59.9, 31.4 Ordon Lake
    /way 69.8, 33 Second T3
    /way 53.8, 78 First T3

    Weekly ("W")

This section of the guide is a bit separate because, unlike the rest of the guide, it can be done multiple times. Therefore, we'll start from a fresh point. I'm going to assume you are at the Alliance/Horde camp right now. Head to the halfway point on the beach between the two camps, and you will see an icon on your map to the west for the first chest. Swim out past the icon until the ocean shelf drops off, and then enter the underwater cavern visible at that point. Inside, fight off the Spectral Pirates and open the chest.

Another weekly chest is located straight south of the words "Old Pi'jiu" on the map. It is represented on the map by the picture of a wrecked ship. Upon arriving at the sunken ship, you will find lots of hostile Cursed Hozen Swabbys. Kill them until you receive a Barnacle Encrusted Key. Note that they have a frontal cone attack that you should definitely move out of, but for some reason they don't indicate this with a cast bar, so watch their animation carefully. Also, don't forget to go up for air if you need it and don't have a Damaged Diving Helmet! After getting the key, head to the bottom floor of the sunken ship, and look under the stairs to find and open the Sunken Treasure.

The next chest we'll cover is the far eastern one, out on the pirate ship: Gleaming Treasure Satchel. You will need to clear out the pirates on the ship, and this could be difficult if you are heavily undergeared since they pull in packs of 3-4 and have a few million HP each, so I really just recommend avoiding this chest if you don't have the gear - there's nothing worth dying for. Additionally, this is also the hardest platforming one, in my opinion at least. Head to the area with the ship's wheel (and captain, possibly) and walk up the piece of rope on the right-hand side (you can probably use the left-hand rope if you're a Gnome or Goblin). Near the end of the rope, you must jump to the mast and walk across it to the Satchel. The jump from the rope to the mast is the hardest part - you will always overshoot if you do it at the very end of the rope, so go to the end of the rope, stand like 5-10 yards back, and jump for it. Alternatively, you can go to the end of the rope, and attempt to just walk off it and land on the mast. This is still tricky though.

The next three chests involve running up into the Firewalker Ruins/The Blazing Way areas repeatedly. For the first one, Gleaming Treasure Chest, head up into the Firewalker Ruins and take an immediate left after heading through the arch - look out over the cliff and you'll see a series of pillars. Stay on your mount and jump carefully from pillar to pillar. You need the speed boost from your mount to make the jumps, and they're actually fairly simple if done while mounted. At the end, loot the chest and jump down.

For Rope-Bound Treasure Chest, head back up into the Firewalker Ruins, proceed through it and across the bridge into The Blazing Way, and right before the next bridge, look to your right and you will see a series of ropes. Drop down to the large "peg" that the highest rope is tied to and begin your tightrope walk! I have an image walkthrough in the comments on the chest's WoWDB page, so check that out for a much better look at what you have to do.

The final weekly "chest" is not really a chest at all... it is more like a minigame to loot as many chests as fast as possible! Note that you literally CANNOT do this event without having previously opened the Gleaming Treasure Chest and Rope-Bound Treasure Chest. Head up into the Firewalker Ruins, cross the bridge into The Blazing Way, and take to head out to the small cliff with only two bridges on it. Here you will sometimes find a Gleaming Crane Statue. Interact with the statue you will be teleported a thousand yards up into the air and given a slow fall buff. You will see tons of Mist-Covered Treasure Chests on floating cloud platforms, and the race is on! Loot as many as you can, though you only need to loot one complete the achievement.

    Code:
    /way 58.6, 60.3 Gleaming Crane Statue
    /way 54, 47.2 Drop from hanging ropes
    /way 49.8, 69.4 Hop across pillars
    /way 70.6, 81 Climb pirate mast
    /way 22.6, 58.8 Underwater entrance west
    /way 40.4, 93 Needs key

Long List for Paste + TomTom Combo
If you have Paste installed in addition to TomTom, you can simply copy this entire block of code, open up Paste in WoW (/paste), and paste all of the code into that. Unlike macros, Paste has no character limit, so when you run the code from Paste, it will populate the entire Timeless Isle map with chests without the need for multiple macros or lots of alt-tabbing back and forth.

    Code:
    /way 58.6, 60.3 Gleaming Crane Statue
    /way 54, 47.2 Drop from hanging ropes
    /way 49.8, 69.4 Hop across pillars
    /way 70.6, 81 Climb pirate mast
    /way 22.6, 58.8 Underwater entrance west
    /way 40.4, 93 Needs key
    /way 47, 26.8 Blazing Chest
    /way 59.9, 31.4 Ordon Lake
    /way 69.8, 33 Second T3
    /way 53.8, 78 First T3
    /way 28.2, 31.2 LONG Albatross ride
    /way 26.6, 65 Short Albatross ride
    /way 46.6, 32.4 Underground
    /way 59.2, 49.4 Behind cave-in
    /way 64.6, 70.2 Gulp Frogs
    /way 61.6, 88.6 Sunken ship
    /way 52.8, 63
    /way 53, 70.8
    /way 49.8, 65.8
    /way 60.4, 66.2
    /way 65, 75.6
    /way 63.8, 59.2
    /way 65.6, 47.8
    /way 58, 50.8
    /way 55.6, 44.4
    /way 51.2, 46
    /way 46.8, 46.8
    /way 47, 53.7
    /way 44.2, 65.2
    /way 43.6, 84
    /way 34.8, 84.4
    /way 39.8, 79.6
    /way 38.8, 71.6
    /way 35.4, 76.4
    /way 31, 76.3
    /way 26.8, 68.8
    /way 22.2, 68
    /way 25.7, 45.8
    /way 24.8, 53
    /way 22.2, 49.2
    /way 22.4, 35.4
    /way 30.8, 36.4
    /way 27.4, 39
    /way 25.4, 27
    /way 36.6, 34
    /way 24.8, 38.8
    /way 26, 61.6
    /way 29.8, 31.8

And that's all for chests! Bookmark this and share with your friends if they get stuck on a chest, don't like treasure hunting, or want a fast way to run series of alts through it.

Edit 3 (September 13th, 2013): Removed references to "Daily" chests since all of them were changed to Weekly when Patch 5.4 hit Live servers. Added details on how to properly enter the Mysterious Den.
Edit 4 (October 7th, 2013): Added a TomTom coordinate to the 'tier 1 group 1' section that I forgot to include (it was already included in the big list though).

Amazing chest guide thank you so much <3! I forsee a lot of timeless coin grinding for me...As I will want all 535 pieces will only stam int and mastery...I will be using burden of eternities like potions of the jade serpent D: ...Right now the cost is 50k timeless coins I believe. Definitely going after those once I have the mount.

Pretty much when I'm not raiding, i'll be on the timeless isle grinding away.

I am immensely conflicted between my desire to have an adventure of discovery and coming across all of these secrets and special things on my own, and my desire to get goodies, achievements and such in a timely manner versus other farmers on a relativly busy server. I can't have it both ways. D:
    Looking marvelous in velvet.

    amazing guide! /bow
    have some questions though

The first time we open a chest of a tier have a 496 epic token right?this token are for specific piece of armor, eg Legs?or it is general for example leather armor and we can buy whatever we like...Since there are six tiers of chests I guess if we are extremely unlucky we will get 6 tokens for epic 496 gear. Does this token have a chance to include Weapons, trinkets, rings?

    thanks again for the guide
The trick of selling a FFA-PvP MMO is creating the illusion among gankers that they are respectable fighters while protecting them from respectable fights, as their less skilled half would be massacred and quit instead of “HTFU” as they claim.

A really amazing guide. Definitly bookmarked for 5.4 release. Thank you so much <3!
With these chests in mind, I'm somewhat happy that the connected realms feature will not go live until some time after the launch of Patch 5.4.

I really should re-install TomTom and try out Paste.

This is a good topic but I do have a question how else can you get Burden of Eternity?

Hmm this is a handy map to use. Where's the 6 and 7 on the map though?

  11. #11
So all of these chests spawn in the same places every time?

I can see mass camping issues arising... especially around the "higher tier" ones.

  12. #12
So... are these chests spawned specific to your character? If not, there's no chance in hell I'm ever going to see more than a handful of these, and never one of the weekly ones.

Odd... There's a 6 in the middle of the Firewalker Ruins in the south and The Blazing Way in the northeast. There's a 7 in the Ordon Sanctuary.

No weapons, but you can basically one of 12 different epic tokens: the 8 armor tokens for your class (Helmet, Shoulders, Chest, etc) plus a Lavalliere (Necklace), Cloak, Signet (Ring), or Curio (Trinket). The Timeless Curio is currently bugged on the PTR and will not drop though, so I don't know if that token will make it to Live realms or not.

Between 1-5 minutes on the PTR right now.

There are five major ways to get Burden of Eternity:
    • Once per character upon opening the Blazing Chest.
    • Once per character upon completing the quest The Archiereus Of Flame.
    • From Mistweaver Ai for 50,000 Timeless Coins
    • From Timeless Chests in Kukuru's cave. They cost 500 coins to open, and rarely they can contain a Burden of Eternity or pet (Bonkers). This is probably way more money efficient than buying the 50k one (unless they change this on Live).
    • From mobs on the island on an extremely low drop rate (or maybe just rares on a low drop rate?).

I can see mass camping issues arising... especially around the "higher tier" ones.
Yes, it is quite possible that will happen at first. Probably will get better with time though.

No, they do not appear to be. It is worth noting that the respawn timer on the weekly/daily chests was extremely fast though - maybe 10-15 seconds.

Fixed this - I think chaud replaced the map with his version on the MMO-Champion servers without realizing that the maps are actually different (front page one is less complex).

Again thanks for the update. Another quick question about burden since it's very critical to gear up my alt.

Isn't the blazing chest also a weekly chest, considering the guaranteed drop of burden? I somewhat recalled that after I once saw my teammate opened one blazing chest and I could not even see that, after I opened one the day before.

One thing I would recommend. Do your ´one time´ chests as soon as possible on alts. Yes, there will be competition on the actual respawn of the chest, but it also means a lot of players will be killing the elite high-level mobs which will help greatly get your low ilvl alts to the chests to begin with. After a few weeks, most geared players will be done with the one-time chests, and you will have to kill a lot of hard mobs to get to the chests. Also, there is shared tagging, which means you will be able to loot those mobs.

Thankfully there are so many of these chests. I can only imagine huge servers like Area52 having everyone waiting around for a hand full of chests. We still bring the server down fighting world bosses.
And I saw, and behold, a pale horse: and he that sat upon him, his name was Death; and Hades followed with him. And there was given unto them authority over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with famine, and with death, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

    Amazing guide, thank you!
