    $2200 build, GTX 780 or Radeon 7990?

So the Radeon 7990 just went through a price cut, bringing it down to 700, just 40-50 dollars away from a GTX 780. Originally my plan was to go with a 780 and add a second 780 in January for SLI but I can't ignore the value of a 700 dollar 7990 so I have a few questions that I want opinions on.

Is the 7990 worth it? I know it does better than a single 780 on all the benchmarks, but once I add the 2nd 780 it'll be performing worse. Would adding a 7970 for Tri-fire offset this?

Here is the link to my pcpartpicker list, and I'll be gaming on a 2560x1440 27 inch korean monitor.

I almost don't see the point of dual 780s. As far as I'm aware, unless you're on a smaller resolution with a 120hz monitor, a 7990 ought to get any game that's GPU based, at 2560x1440 at at least 60fps. Dual 780s would cost much more, and really not give much visible benefit. I could be wrong, but I'm looking at Metro 2033 (which is one of the roughest GPU games right now, I think) and the 7990 hits aboutt 50fps. Dual 780s would get 60... at twice the price.

7990 imo BUT you have to look at it like this:
if at $700 theyre giving the performance of dual 7970, what about $700 in next gen come october? i think the 9970 will be crazy

7990 http://www.mmo-champion.com/editpost...6&do=editpost= horrible scaling in certain games.
also it can't be CF with another 7970.
as for performance of a single 780 , i can still play bf3 maxed with minor dips to 50's on 1440p. (a single card really offers allot of performance)

Honestly, save 200 dollars and get a 680, there isn't a game out there that it can't max out. It's like putting 40 dollars worth of stamps on something that costs 50 cents to mail....why bother? It's not going to "mail it better".

GTX780, though, given the recent reduction in price and the driver fixes on the 7990, I wouldn't be ashamed to go for that.

The 680 gets about 40fps on FC3, and 30fps on Metro. I'd hardly call that maxing it out.

The only 6xx card to ever recommend anymore is the 660, if you're on a budget.

With the frame pacing drivers and the price reduction I would get the 7990 for 1600p.

Just make sure the games you're planning to play is properly supported by crossfire by looking at the charts here: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7990/25.html

Since this is primarily a WoW site you might wanna check the crossfire performance in WoW, it's simply horrible.

You mean save $200 and get a GTX 770, right?

The 770 is a better 680, essentially, on a Titan PCB... so... And has more VRAM. =X

It's a pretty massive card. Dual GPU, I'm not sure what you were expecting? >.>

I'll probably stick with Nvidia in this case then, I know the new drivers fixed frame pacing issues however they are still a bit behind Nvidia and any upgrade path would require a new PSU as the 7990 is a massive power hog.

Ya I decided to go with 1440p as my original build had a high refresh rate monitor but I decided against it and went with a korean 1440p 27 inch monitor to make better use of the high performance parts. With my 2nd 780 being added in July I may look into an even higher quality monitor, may even consider one of those new fancy 4k monitors.

    I could have sworn I remembered the 680 having 1.5GB/3GB versions. >_<

Doesn't change the fact the 770 is a stronger card for the $$$.

Ready to pay 1500$ for graphics cards setup, wants to save 400$ on monitor by going the cheap 1440p route. I don't understand? Why not Samsung or Dell? I own the S27A850D btw, the panel is superb, colors are amazing.

And to your question, I would go single 780 and keep it for as long as I can and upgrade it again in about 2 generations.

SLI/CF is just a hassle in so many games, I know from experience

    770 is not a Titan PCB... it's a 680 PCB (GK104), 780 is a Titan PCB (GK110)

Maybe my memory is not serving me well right now, but I could have sworn the 770 was on a Titan PCB (yes the chip is an updated 680) and the 780 is on a Titan PCB and also technically a Titan chip, just less turned on within the chip.
