Personally, I hate getting hit when I'm casting so I always go for tank companions

This, and a companion's gear doesn't get damaged when attacked so I feel like I'm making substantial savings in repair costs when I don't get hit XD

I have a basic usage laptop.

i5, 6gb of DDR3 and an integrated video card on my laptop I can play at medium settings, have music streaming from youtube and a video running while playing the game

Ensure that your computer can run this game. SWTOR is really a heavy game. Also i'm not sure if you are F2P or not. But as soon as I subbed and logged back in, the game gave me an option to optimize the settings. I did not get this option as free to play. This increased my performance greatly.
