PC Classics that MUST be played?

Since I'm only 17 I've never played any of these games that the internet seems to cream over, and I feel like I am missing out on lot of great stuff. The only problem is I struggle to enjoy games that haven't aged well (e.g. Diablo 1, I tried, I really did but I just couldn't enjoy it). That being said, what are some classics that my generation have missed which should really be played and still hold their own?

Neverwinter series, Baldur's Gate 1&2, Planescape: Torment, Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

I would also add KoToR for the PC, Mount & Blade, Battlefield 1942 with mods and Total War up to Medieval they aren't as old but still classics in my mind.

any of the old quest for glory's, kings quest's or space quest's. Loved playing all those back in the day, not sure how to go about getting them. Maybe GoG.com has em. Or X-wing vs. TIE Fighter even. Definitely agree with the Knights of the Old Republic games those were awesome.

Monkey Island, a series of adventure games that to many were the climax of the adventure genre. A level that has not been equaled.

    System Shock 2
    Fallout 1
Half Life 1 (And 2 obligatory, but not old enough to be 'classic')
    Warcraft 1-3
    Privateer
Homeworld 1 and 2 (Not Cataclysm)
    Deus Ex

Keep in mind, there are a LOT of classic games that are worth knowing about, but may not be worth playing. Stuff like Marathon and System Shock 1 and Omikron are classic, iconic games, but some games may well be too old to play, or simply not be fun anymore, unless you're in the right mood.

There are also a lot of iconic and 'must play' games in the past ten years (not listed above) as well, but a lot of those games are from the late 90s, early 2000s.

I recommend at least playing (not necessarily completing) those above.

GoG.com has all of the Quest for Glorys , King's Quests and Space Quests, along with Police Quests.

GoG is a great place to get a lot of must play classics.

You know when my best gaming experiences were? When I stopped playing WoW exclusively for like 2.5 years and saw just how much games had evolved! Only hassle is - every time, I've had to upgrade my rig - but never ever been let down by the advancement in tech, graphics and gameplay of the new stuff. When I stopped playing Cataclysm, I bought like 20 one to two year old games for under 5 bucks each and they were all pretty damn good.

that said ... NOSTALGIA... is a horrible thing when confronted with REALITY :P

one too many... "festives" in there :P

The great thing about some of the really old games, is that if you hear good things about them, you can check them out in just a few days. I remember the first two Civilizations taking me weeks to complete, but I can complete either in a full day, now. The Ultima games were good, but the controls might give you issues if you're used to the mouse interface.

The lack of Sierra adventure games in this thread depresses me.

Quest for Glory (QFG 4 is one of my favorite games ever)
    Gabriel Knight
Phantasmagoria (do NOT play Phantasmagoria 2)
    Shivers
    Torin's Passage
    Leisure Suit Larry
    Space Quest
    Police Quest

As for non-Sierra, I saw Grim Fandango mentioned but people should also give Full Throttle a shot. The original Sam & Max games are pretty damn funny too. There's also Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis (available on Steam!). For non-funny you might try out The Dig (also on Steam).

Also, completely unrelated to the above, WING COMMANDER!

Edit: I missed Nixaler's post the first time around...

Oh fuck, and The 7th Guest. Can't believe I forgot that one. Scared the shit out of me as a kid.

Probably dont hold up from a gameplay perspective anymore, but I was a HUGE fan of the Wing Commander series (way) back in the day.

Nobody's mentioned Myst yet? I'm disappoint.

Also, Sid Meyer's Pirates is pretty cool, as well as The Elder Scrolls series.
