    Best video game lore universes?

Other than wow, what are some video games that have a solid, established lore universe. I'm referring to the Elder Scrolls, Warhammer type of games that have extensive lore not just a single game with a good story.

The Halo universe and the Mass Effect universe are the most interesting for me. This is probably because they're rooted in a setting that may eventually become reality and the future of human kind. Also, The Citadel becoming the new nerve center of all intelligent life in the Universe is also a very interesting concept from Mass Effect.

I agree. It has a lot of back story. Most of it isn't relevant to the main story. But those are the best parts.

The Witcher. Pretty much drew me in from the get go.
Of all losses, time is the most irrecuperable for it can never be redeemed

Definitely The Witcher series. Great universe, great lore.

It's like a Game of Thrones type game done right...maybe even done better than Martin's novels.

I really want to say the Warcraft universe but Blizzard has been going blatantly overboard on the "gameplay over story" ideology to the extent that they gladly throw lore to the wind just to make arbitrary changes to gameplay. It's saddening.

I'd also say Halo but, while the Forerunner story set up by Halo 4's TERMINALS was absolutely amazing, the story that the developers shoehorned to the players was lackluster and obnoxious with trying to get us emotionally attached to Cortana and the Chief when they've pretty much been nothing but AI and super soldier to us up until now.

elder scrolls is insanely deep, so much so that the average person doesn't even realize large chunks of it exist

Half-life lore is also interesting. The bad side is tho you need to read all on wiki.
    For example: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Combine

    Also C&C series.

Portal, Legacy of Kain, Oddworld, Grim Fandango and so on and on.
    Don't sweat the details!!!

Not really video-game specific, but I like the Galactic Civil War era of Star Wars. Also, Warhammer (fantasy, not 40k) is set in an absolutely spectacular world.

Huh, I didn't know there was really all that much of a story behind that. I've always been a big supporter of Mechwarrior, but mostly for their very realistic portrayal of what a 200 ton bipedal tank would move and fight like. None of that skating around and flashy lightsaber dueling that other mechs like Gundams do. No, with a Mechwarrior mech, you get a small earthquake with every step accompanied by that satisfying "vrrrrrrrr *boom* vrrrrrr *boom* vrrrrrrr *boom*" And giant laser rifles that you actually have to pick up and shoot like a normal gun? Who the fuck thought that made sense on a mech? None of that shit in Mechwarrior, though. But you might see one with a freaking howitzer for an arm. And they can't fly, but when one of those bastards jumps, everyone within a 5 mile radius needs a new pair of pants. Plus, this thing:

I actually run one of those in my tabletop army, or I did back when I still played. Not much for offense, but if you just need to make a wall, it basically cannot die.

    Dragon Age
    The Elder Scrolls

Warcraft use to be on the list, but Blizz has been jumping the shark . . . a lot.
