Im just spitballing here but if the night elves and taurens coexisted, is it possible that's how the night elves/taurens learnt the ways of the druid from one another? Or have those 2 races always been able to shapeshift.

They didn't exist at that time. Blizzard created them in WC3.
Since vanilla, they gave us little information about old races, and they didn't do anything to be known, because they never participated in anything "heroic" or important.
Maybe, in a new expansion with a new lore-events, they can write something for this poor races to explain something more and understand what happened between them (or maybe, nothing happened).

From what I understand there were tauren druids years ago (like before war of the ancients) then over time it was lost and then only rediscovered/taught after wc3.

"Mother Nature" is a construct of a religious mentality. Nature has no thoughts, has no feelings and has no concern for the plant kingdom. Four different kingdoms, by the way. None of them of any more concern to nature than a piece of alloyed steel.
You are talking about a game where the simplest (trees, flowers, etc) thing can become sentient. There is a very, very big difference between the reverence Night Elves hold for nature and any Native American mythology in the real world.

When your trees can talk and are essentially Demi-Gods, ya, you'd be pretty pissed if someone was chopping them down without care.

War of the shifting sands was way later, but yeah it did not seems to have involved the taurens

There is however night elf ruins all the way down the coast of kalimdor down to silithus so maybe that explains some the reason of them being so far away from their current homestay.

The Taurens as a RACE exist since a long time ago, but as an unified nation? Just a few years. Before the Horde they were on a bad shape as nomadic tribes getting decimated by the centaurs. (then you change that with rexxar, chen stormstout, etc)

Yup, the NE taught the Tauren about Druidism after the third war, although the tauren were druids many years ago.

OT: The Night Elves had: Darkshore, Ashenvale, Felwood, Moonglade, Mount Hyjal, part of Winterspring, Stonetalon, part of Feralas and actually had a town in silithus. The Town is destroyed by the time of WOW.

The taurens had tribes on Mulgore, the Barrens, stonetalon, thousand needles and feralas.

It seems like the Tauren had great respect, almost fear of the NE at the time while the NE didn't mind the Tauren.

Other than that we had the few pirates, some farraki on the desert, one or another troll village here and there and that's it.

The only real feud was between centaus x taurens, centaurs vs trolls, centaurs vs harpies, centaurs vs centaurs.... Damn those centaurs.

they had more lore behind them that most of the other playable races, and really attached to deities/ancients and elementals. The bad thing is we are destroying all things that had a really good potential to become something.

let's just say that if the Orcs didn't come in and save the tauren from centaurs the Tauren may be dead or alliance race.

That may just have been Knaak messing up the lore, though.

The Tauren were originally taught Druidism by Cenarius.

In time, the child, Cenarius, grew to the stature of his proud father. A brother to both the trees and the stars, the great hunter roamed the far places of the world, singing the harmonious songs of the dawning. All creatures bowed before his grace and beauty - there were none so cunning as the son of the moon and the white stag.

Eventually, Cenarius befriended the Shu'halo and spoke to them of the turning world. The children of the earth knew him as brother and swore to help him care for the fields of life and the favored creatures of their great Earthmother.

Cenarius taught the children of the earth to speak to the trees and plants. The Shu'halo became druids and worked great deeds of magic to nurse the land to health. For many generation the Shu'halo hunted with Cenarius and kept the world safe from the shadows that stirred beneath it.
They supposed forgot much of what they were taught though. The Night Elves eventually helped them relearn druidism.

And Azshara for night elves, it was fully night elven land. In WC3:TFT, Maiev is hunting Illidan in Azshara in the first mission, where he has destroyed night elf villages with the naga.

Which reminds me, sand trolls, why didn't they help battle the silithids? Or the centaurs? Yea, night elves, evil for them, but silithids were a greater evil. They were also closer, imagine the resource lines between Ashenvale and Silithus...

trolls can be terribly parochial, even against their own self interest it seems.

Lore-wise, while there were once Tauren Druids at a point in the past, they "forgot" the druidic teachings, and the Night Elves retaught them that after the battle for mount hyjal.

Which raises the next question, what was Tyrande doing then? Or Shandris? Or... even Malfurion, since I'd say it's worth to wake him up for something like this... or Cenarius?

He is making a joke. As the men were largely druids and the women were mainly sentinels so they were awake while a large majority of the males slept in the emerald dream.

I don't even know what the night elves were even doing down in silithus, as I assumed after the well of eternity they pretty much retreated to the forests. As far as I was aware Fandral was a good commander until his son died if I remember it right. Then he was depressed and then it went to shit afterwards until the dragons came along and bailed him out.

The Tauren feared the Elves and seen them as mystical creatures. Keep in mind at that time the Elves were still immortal.

take this with a pinch of salt considering its from the RPG books, which are no longer canon

Obviously the official lore as of WoW is that Night Elves have always been a co-educational society, with male and female druids, and male and female sentinals,

but when you actually play WCIII all the huntress, sentinal, and archer units are female, and all the Druid units are male, and (presumably all) the druids were asleep before you awaken them; implying an amazonian sociecty in which only the females are awake and active above ground.

it's just a joke to pretend that the implication is real.

Well they didn't change the story the night elves just changed their society after the third war. But yes, the dyking it out part was just a joke.
