I think a wingman is the person that you take to bars in case a fight breaks out. They are brought for fights, because they are the ones who give you wings when you - who don't go out drinking much most likely due to distaste in usual "bar" scenes - are flipping people off. It's an indicator toward how good they are at teamwork.
