With AviSynth it should be possible, but haven't tried it.

MKV is a container file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file and Sony Vegas doesn't accept it natively.

You can try Brorsoft Video Converter to encode MKV to mpeg-2 video for importing and editing in Sony Vegas Pro. It would be the best solution for you.

Handbrake is another good one for converting MKV's into MP4's and free, plus you can do batch conversions.

You can of course play MKV videos using classic player with Community Codec Pack, but you can't make it readable with Sony Vegas. That's because MKV is a container file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file and Sony Vegas doesn't accept it natively. If you want to directly open MKV in Sony Vegas Pro, you will be frustrated for Vegas not supporting MKV format. In order to import MKV Sony Vegas Pro smoothly, you'd need to convert MKV to Sony Vegas Pro supported formats first.
