You better have some kind of evidence to back up that, because there is no WAY the population of a country as messed up as the US, with its treatment of its citizens is the "smartest in the world"

Im only gonna comment on the education part, cause everything here is turning in a flame war between patriots through thick and thin and critical thinking americans, but the arguments being brought up on education differ in starting point. One posted how many people got an education, the other however posted a link on the level (quality) of education. The OP didnt specify what he meant, but the logical causal train of thought would lead us to believe that if the quality of education dropped, more people would be able to finish an education, so that would explain why the other poster said america was high in education (having an education).

Just thought I would help a little in the shouting war. Go on ahead

The US is not declining by any appreciable metric at any appreciable rate relative to other major developed countries. America is a superpower because of its military, economic, political, and social dominance, the foundations of which are not only firmly intact, but are gaining strength relative to others'. The typical response to this is: "But China/EU!" China is a demographic and economic time-bomb no different from any of the other Asian Tiger economies, while the EU has no military power and its soft power has been seriously degraded by its debt crisis. Moreover, the EU is a satellite of the American geopolitical world order; its relevance is derived solely from that.

The typical "America ranks poorly in X!" rhetoric seems to forget America still ranks well into the top 50 of nations, and the actual statistical differences between the ranking countries are marginal. As far as all the factors that make one a superpower, America continues to reign supreme in all of them. Europeans can act smug about their (quite superior) welfare states, healthcare systems, and K-12 education, but they really don't matter on the world stage, especially when the US university system--which has nothing close to a rival--vacuums them up anyway.

I wouldn't say declining, the US is just growing slower then it used to and it will be overtaken by other world powers in the next 5-10 years.

    The attributes of the US

    STR: 18 (max)
    DEX: 12
    CON: 10
    INT: 8+3
    WIS: 7+1
    CHA: 9

    STR: Strength - Military power
    DEX: Dexterity - Economy
    CON: Constitution - Health
    INT: Intelligence - Education
    WIS: Wisdom - Government
    CHA: Charisma - Reputation

Modifiers: Minorities that manage to have a large effect on the country as a whole. Here we see a low overall score for the general population, with a minority from elite schools managing to have a large impact on INT, while the minority in the government sector is less successful due to checks & balance...

EDIT: CHA should probably be 13-4...
Anyway, not a declining country. And if so, I definitely wouldn't point at the economy...

America is the biggest economy. Anybody talking it down stating that it is a small economy is deluded. They have loads of IP and most of the stocks in the american market cover all areas of the market sector.

People need to stop complaining and acting like the government has a huge say in the market when it is basically the private sector in general.

Yeah, that could use some fixing. Historical precent suggests this is temporary.

We're the fourth most educated country in the world (source).

Given your track record, this makes me optimistic.
    Thank you.

Did I just walk through a time warp to 2008? Are people still having this discussion? You guys do know that the assholes who started talking about the decline of the US in the media in 2008 are the same assholes who were talking about the permanent ascension of the American hyper-power in 2003 after the invasion of Iraq, right? It's all a bunch of bullshit. The US is not declining. Decline implies some kind of ideal state to move away from. The US is changing. Our economy is in the process of restructuring and we have discovered the mission limits of military power in the modern world. But, the US is still the preeminent cultural, military, and economic force on the planet and no single country is a near challenger yet. Will the Chinese or the Indians or some other country become a challenger? Maybe. Probably even. But that isn't happening today in 2013.
