I'm going to go with "we didn't" because the French started giving us money and guns as early as 1776.

When survival is the goal, it's into the spider hole!
Simple. In order for the British to win, they would have to make us want to stay (through beating the crap out of us, mostly). In order for the Americans to win, all we had to do was not lose.
Because the Brits were fighting a war far from home, meaning hard to get supplies, reinforcements and orders, and it was a war that the Brits really didn't have much of an interest in. It was seen as an unnecessary expense, and the general population wanted the army to draw back.
On top of that, most of the wars the British waged during the imperialism wasn't fought with British troops, but by corrupting the local governors and taking over the occupied country through bribes, and if necessary with mercenaries.
Ofcourse they still had a contingent of the British army garrisoned in the US, but they were outnumbered by far.
"In today’s America, conservatives who actually want to conserve are as rare as liberals who actually want to liberate. The once-significant language of an earlier era has had the meaning sucked right out of it, the better to serve as camouflage for a kleptocratic feeding frenzy in which both establishment parties participate with equal abandon" (Taking a break from the criminal, incompetent liars at the NSA, to bring you the above political observation, from The Archdruid Report.)
basically this, overly stretched supply lines and slow communication and at the same time britain was fighting First Anglo-Mysore War, First Anglo-Maratha War as well as the revolution. The other two wars may not have been as big but still required troops and supplies.
Though its weird to say britain vs america when at the time most white people in america were one or two generations at most removed from european immigrants. It is also said that though they lost the majority of the battles they endured the losses until the other side couldnt.
Had Britain never colonized Asia and instead focused on the America's I have no doubt they would have won the revolution.
