Probably just a branding move to keep their icons consistent, thus going with the basic icon. They've been doing a lot of UI/UX work with the battle.net app and looks like it was a part of that.
Also it's a lot sharper on my HD devices like retina display apple products.
I liked Ghostcrawler before it was cool.
The power-tripping mod in this thread infracting people for being silly (at no one's expense, mind you) is the real concern here.

Seriously though, what's up with the Maelstrom behind it? Has that been on the logo Before? Azshara lives there, in the Rift of Aln. Possibly also the location of the Dark Below - between there and Vashj'ir, under the seafloor.
Son of a bitch...
I was laughing at first at the OP for reacting to something meaningless, but that may just mean something.
I can't imagine them taking the time to just throw in the Maelstrom faintly into the background for shits and giggles.
Unless someone can find this icon dating back to the past, well..
Good freaking catch.
I think they are completely done with MoP related work and are fully focused on the next expansion. It would only be natural for things to crop up from various teams in preparation. We don't see it but they are seeing it daily. Not saying the icon means much except we are progressing past Mists of Pandaria.

Obviously some artist had some extra time so he tossed the maelstrom behind it so it looks a bit more natural. He probably literally pasted the icon over the World Map, then darkened it.
If you truly believe that, Blizzard, show me you mean it. Because WoD didn't show me.As long as players are happy and enjoy the game, the team doesn't mind extreme peaks and valleys. They just want to ensure you have a great experience and feel like you got your money's worth.
