This is just not true. If I knock over someone´s beer at a bar and we get into a fight and both are arrested for assault, that is far different from someone who attacks someone in a street because they are black or gay.

"it would be up to the defense to disprove it" Slick. Then rather than prove they can read a person's mind the person has to prove they did it wrong. Oy. That's why, despite its violence, Clockwork Orange is a morality tale. It tries to show how thoughtcrime and psychological 'treatment' are presumptive and wrong. Happens the R.C. church is running up against something like that. archive.catholicherald.co.uk/article/25th-july-2003/5/bishops-ruled-by-fear

It's not that hate crimes are ridiculous from a legal point; it's that everyone tries to make it into one.

"Why" and "how" the crime was executed are important, but whether hate crime laws go too far depends on the statue and examples.

Hate crime laws very, very rarely apply to murder:

According to the FBI Hate Crime Statistics report for 2006, hate crimes increased nearly 8% nationwide, with a total of 7,722 incidents and 9,080 offenses reported by participating law enforcement agencies. Of the 5,449 crimes against persons, 46% were classified as intimidation and 31.9% as simple assaults. 81% of the 3,593 crimes against property were acts of vandalism or destruction.[56]

However, according to the FBI Hate Crime Statistics for 2007, the number of hate crimes decreased to 7,624 incidents reported by participating law enforcement agencies.[57] These incidents included 9 murders and 2 rapes(out of the almost 17,000 murders and 90,000 forcible rapes committed in the U.S. in 2007)
I personally have no problem with the state disproportionately punishing people who commit crimes out of bigotry. Bigots need to know that society does not tolerate them.

    What do you think?
I'm fine with society emphasising hate crimes, rape of children etc more severly than the 'standard' version of such crimes.
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.
