Looking to build MMO (WoW for now) Gaming rig ~$800 (no peripherals or OS needed)

I'm giving my son my existing computer and building myself a new one and looking for assistance on what to get

Budget: $~800 (if adding ~$100ish more can result in a SIGNIFICANT increase, no problem)

Resolution: 1920x1080 (main monitor), 1650x1050 (second monitor)

    Games/usage:
I mainly play WoW, and mostly will be just MMO's (if anything comes out in the next few years). Obviously I'd like to play at max settings if possible.
I also play a bunch of old arcade games via M.A.M.E., but doubt that will affect any choices.
I do a some minor dvd-ripping and video encoding (handbrake to get files to iPad/phone sizes) but that it pretty minimal

    Country: US

Parts I am reusing/already have: SSD, Monitors, Peripherals (mouse/kbd/headset)

I do NOT need an OS.

I don't really care about the look of a case (the simpler the better), I'd much prefer functionality - ease of access to add/remove drives, memory, etc. I'd rather not have my room lighting up neon-red/blue, and quiet is always good (though not looking to pay extra for special noise-reducing cases).

I'd prefer to order from Newegg since they are basically in my backyard and stuff gets here fast, but also have Amazon Prime for 2nd day shipping there.

    Thanks for any help!

Would sure as hell hold off on a new GPU purchase for another few weeks. AMD's mid/low tier pricing is extremely competitive and NVIDIA is said to be dropping prices on the GTX 760 and other cards. I know WoW is nvidia-biased so thats why I'm saying to wait for a price drop if possible, not go team red

Two things I'd change on Lemmiwink's build:

    1) change from the Builder 600W to the XFX Pro series 550W non-modular; and
    2) probably get an R9-series card, dependent on how the GPU pricings fall in the next couple of weeks.

Reason I listed Nvidia is because they usually give better results in MMO's for some reason. Builder 600W is a good PSU, the XFX Pro is better though, I was merely trying to stay within budget.

I would also advice him to wait for the R9 because it will definately lower the prices on nvidia gpu's as well.

Go with this except change the WD Black to a Blue 64mb cache. Faster single platter HDD. Also stay with the 7950 as the RX series most likely isn't going to offer a same level performance for the price. You can't beat a 7950 for $180 considering it ties with the $260 GTX 760.

However, the Black comes with a better warranty, which is fantastic for a non-SSD build.

Until NVIDIA drops the price of the 760..

Also, I really wouldn't say the 7950 ties with the 760 especially since we're talking about MMOs ( specifically WoW, which is better on the green side). Not to mention that the 7950 wont (doesnt) have hardware frame pacing so crossfire still is a terrible option there once you need/want more power.

Thanks for the info I'll take a look. I'm not sure I can wait for the video card prices to drop since I have to give my current one to my kid in a week (a birthday thing, other PC components and games are coming from other relatives). I may have a passable temporary video card in the basement I'll have to check.

What kind of price drops are people expecting?

I think you can expect the price drops within the week alongside more AMD card releases and reviews! This is one time you really should wait

Nvidia have said they aren't dropping the price on the 760/770, so don't expect that for a while.

I have an unused video card I found in a box that will suffice for a week or two until the new cards are released and prices move around. Thanks for all the info!

"Interestingly, NVIDIA did take the time to reiterate that these are the only price cuts that are taking place. The GTX 760 and GTX 770 are not getting price cuts and will remain at $249 and $399 respectively"

I suspect that because the GTX 770 is selling very well and that it still edges out the 7970 keeps it in it's own category for now. If the 290 from AMD performs really well, then I wouldn't be surprised if the 770 gets a slight drop in price (along with the 780).

    No.

R9-280X is in competetion with the 770, and a much better buy for the money.
770 vs 7970(not the GHz) the 770 was better buy since it was clocked much higher resulting in a big performance difference.

Now you can get a 1100 MHz 280X that performs just as good or better than custom 770's for 90-100 $ less.

If the R9-290 gets released it is in competetion with the 780. 770 sold well against the 7970's, that wont be the case anymore unless they lower the price down to 320 $.

    R9-290 = 780
    R9-290X = Titan

    Also I quote from hardwarecanucks.

"NVIDIA’s poor positioning is completely of their own making. They reduced pricing on lower end cards but missed a golden opportunity preempt AMD’s publicly announced pricing structure before the R9 280X was even released. Instead, the GTX 770 and GTX 760 have been caught flat footed and just can’t be recommended at this point. There’s just no getting around the fact that you can buy two R9 280X cards for the price of a single GTX 780 and still have $50 left over. "

The problem with i5 4670k is that it runs hotter then the 3570k
