My response is usually interest. Not in any particular sense for the photographs in the OP; those people are interesting on the same level everyone interests me. But the woman Velaniz posted is far more interesting. I want to know her, know her story, where she stands in life and how she perceives it. The same is true for pretty much everyone, of course, but people who go out of their way to deliberately physically distance themselves from the masses... I am drawn to them.

the woman he posted was abused by her husband. i don't think she believes her body modifications is because of it, but i kinda get the feeling it is. she's catholic and tries to live a good life. i think she lives in columbia or brazil? not sure. you can probably read about her, national geographic did a taboo episode with her.

And that is incredibly nasty for her, but I'm not interested in the facts, per sé... More in the human being. I'm not drawn to her in particular in the sense that I want to research her. But if I met her on the street, I would wish to communicate with her. Hear from her. Learn about her from her.

I won't even notice unless we're talking like neon green hair and 30 facial piercings, in which case I might wonder to myself exactly what kind of people they are. No offense meant by that btw, just sort of contemplate on what their daily life might be like.

I'm one of those semi-weird people, I'll put my hair in a mohawk once in awhile(it's short, nothing crazy) and still get a ton of people staring. Apparently a lot of people think girls with short hair are lesbians or something?

I don't see the point in laughing at people who choose to look different. If they like looking that way, more power to them. I have respect for people who really just don't give a shit what other people think.

I have no gut reaction to them unless they have facial tattoos, which I think look ridiculous no matter what, so many facial piercings that your face looks like it was the receiving end of a shrapnel blast, or their ear lobes are stretched to the size of dinner plates. Even then, my reaction is that it just looks ugly as sin, but it has no impact on how I judge their character.

If it's really unusual then my gut reaction is that I'll never be able to understand or relate to that person, because they are just too different (to the extreme) and I don't see the point in socialising with them as neither of us will get anything out of it. Extreme cases would be where people implant things under their skin or get totally covered in tattoos from head to toe, or have hundreds of piercings in their face. Stuff like that.

It would be really hard to get a definitive answer to your question though, as part of the subject - namely what constitutes an unusual appearance - is subjective in and of itself.

I always wonder why they want or feel the need to do that to themselves. Most jobs people strive to have don't allow people to do things like that and I can't imagine having a family and living a "normal" family life would be possible if you were a visual showcase.

I don't find shaved heads weird, it's practical for some people. Piercings alone are not weird, it's the size and shape of the jewelry that causes people to stare. Giant bull rings in your nose, gigantic plugs or spikes in your ear, thick rings in your eyebrow or lip....

But it's their life they can do what they want I guess, but I really haven't met someone who looks like that who is completely happy with their life and has their ideal job and family life, they're just expressing themself, but when they want to "move up" in life like get a better job/ career, start a family, or whatever...it's going to be difficult.

TL;DR- People can do what they want with their body, just don't come crying when you can't live the life you really want to because you made the decision to look like that.

These..., also i'm going to shave my head, but that's because thanks to my lovely's father genes, i have 2 big holes in my head (My hair T.T -the sad part is that one of the things that i like the most of the people is the hair)

I have a much stronger negative gut feeling towards the petty and ridiculous normative rules of the "standard" society, that is easily bewildered by something as mundane as haircuts and body decoration, and is inclined to view a person as more trustworthy and competent just because they wrapped themselves in a meaningless uniform consisting of a suit and a tie.

    Pics or it never happened!

I'm pretty intrigued by certain views here though, especially revolving around body modification - but that's another discussion entirely really.

Most piercings (anything non earing really, or even an earing on a guy) are really gross and I can't help but think they are trashy. It doesn't have to be true, but no one can help their subconscious first impression.
    Stay salty my friends.

    I don't really agree...
You see, the first girl has chosen for piercings that accentuate features. For instance, she has a left-leaning face, so by adding asymmetry to her right side, she accentuates her face in a way that grounds the total picture.

The second girl makes the mistake of using bright metal (never good with her skin-tone), her piercings are all very roughly set, 'balanced' in that two-by-two manner you see, and she made the great mistake of shaving her eyebrows. In addition, her teeth are really crooked, and her skin complexion is not very supportive for her overall look.

The center nose piercings draw attention to the center of her face, where her complexion becomes reddish pink. They do so with a colour of metal that quite frankly combines horribly with her complexion.

Then we look down slightly; the center nose ring coupled with the lip ring form a framework for her (studded) teeth. So the teeth are accentuated. They're also crooked. Rather than having crooked teeth as a beauty-flaw that can lift the ordinary into the cute, she accentuates the teeth themselves, making them an independent central figure... And they're ugly when viewed in that light. The fact that the studs themselves are situated in horrible relations to one another does not mitigate this in the slightest.

And then we get to the (apparent) removal of her eyebrows. Her eyes aren't all that large, and without the framework of eyebrows, they look positively tiny. Which doesn't look very good to people. She looks a great deal more stupid than she would otherwise.

All in all: It's not so much the amount of piercings that are the problem with the image; it's her incredibly misguided self-image. Her choices simply do not work for her.

It depends on the look really. Overly tattooed or overly pierced people kind of freak me out, but dome heads don't, it's fairly normal I think for men to shave their heads sometimes. It's something I've thought about my self but I'm afraid I'll look weird and then be stuck with a dome head looking weird for a while.

I work at a Uni so I tend to see people trying pretty hard to stand out. It really doesn't phase me.

Is a shaved head really that unusual? I shave mine ones a week. While not the most popular look with the ladies is still pretty common here in Australia.
