There were also some nuclear weapon transportation mishaps that graced the headlines a while back.
He wasn't really 'fired', he was relieved of his day to day duties, pending the investigation.
That said, something like a gambling problem is how you lose security clearance, so I assume he will be allowed to resign from the military if the investigation has hard evidence that he knowingly used fake chips.
PS -> Iowa has casinos? You learn something new every day...
Miss use of classified information. Would not be the first guy that sold out his country due to gambling problems. Why? He's been fired for it. What's to worry about?
People fit for this type of a job should really be above this kind of earthly "sins".
There have been events in the world, where people with their fingers on the button have been put in a situation where someone who likes to gamble would have already scorched the Earth. Yes, this gambler was fired from his position as the #2 Commander of the U.S. nuclear forces, but what's worrying is that such a person held the position at all.
First of all, we have no proof that he has a 'gambling problem', the investigation is into if he knowingly used fake casino chips. That might allude to a gambling problem; it might not.
However, this guy would never be the one with his 'finger on the button', and unlike the movies there is more of a requirement for launching a nuclear weapon than just one guy pushing a big red button.
I recently read an article about some soviet officer who was in this kind of situation. In cold war there was some mistake and alert was given that USA had launched nukes to the soviets, the officer was sure that it was a mistake and he decided to not give the call that would've launched the nukes from soviet to USA. The officer was fired from his job eventhough it turned out to be a mistake and that if he had decided otherwise, it would've most likely end up in nuclear war...He later won several awards for his actions. So atleast in cold war there actually was a one guy with his "finger on the button"
He got fired, just shows the system is working in at least this case

Regardless if true or not it is not about that. Any addiction and problem can be exploited by foreign or domestic powers. Pretty sure a person in his position sits on a welath of information that is sensitive.
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.
It is a well known fact that the higher up the ranks Officers get, the crazier they are. To be a Colonel means to be absolutely potty, Generals are almost certifiable, they all have their vices.
My first thought was, "Would you like to play a game?"
As for the man in question, I'm glad they're looking into it, and I'm glad we're not all glowing in the dark already. I sympathize with just about everyone placed in a position of great responsibility, particularly when a bright light is shone on their imperfections. I don't know whether I'd rather not know that someone with a potential gambling problem and pretty big weak point was in such a position, or glad to know (but really hope the matter doesn't take center stage when it's already being dealt with, and there are frankly other things we could be scrutinizing more productively).
