I love the information I have found on the mmo-champion site, so I wanted to give something back in return. A simple guide to www.AskMrRobot.com Why? Since I see a lot of questions how people can improve their dps and most of the times, this considers swapping gems etc. and I think AMR is a lovely tool for this.
I could link you to the site itself, but I think most people would say: "meh.." and forget about it right away. So a little push to help them to the right direction. If you want to learn more about Ask Mr Robot, I suggest you read their site. They get paid and all that sort stuff by writing pages and pages of guides.
Why do I need a robot?
Since the start of WoW, people have been doing everything in their power to maximize their dps. The introduction of gems, reforges, enchants and all sorts of secondary stats have all made this a little harder, because we need to take all sorts of soft and hard caps into account. Therefore, there is a site called Ask Mr Robot to help you with this and the site itself is quite hilarious.
This guide will only go into the options of reforging & regemming your gear and checking if an item is an upgrade or not. AMR has many more options, which I'm discovering too. Some better than others. If you want to contribute to this guide, feel free to do so! Lets bump that mage community.
Oh and by the way, I am in no way affiliated with AMR (although if they consider to donate a significant amount of goodies or coins after reading this little piece, feel free to think so).
Convinced! Tell me the simplest way, I'm a modest person
You simply go to www.askmrrobot.com and load your character in the 'Optimize my character' section. Now you can see a few options and to the right you can see your current statistics. We are going to check if everything is optimized. By clicking the big green button 'Optimized'. Now AMR will give you a few options where you can optimize your gear or tell you it is all in order.
Above the second column, there will be a button where you can see what you need to get off the Auction House or reforge. Check everything you've done and tadaa, you're all set to top those meters.
Yes, yes. All fine, but how about my own settings?
That is also pretty simple, but there are some numbers involved. You can change your soft / hard caps and stat weights at the ‘edit weights’ section. So if you, for example, want to try out a full haste build, you can lower the value of mastery & crit and boost the haste value. Here, I also select my softcap for haste for example.
You might want to check the options too. What if your guild will never run Heroics and you don't want to get the gear to pop up every time you check for an upgrade? You can disable Heroic gear here. For Mages, there's a specific option for your preferred Armor in the Options section. There has been much discussion over which armor should be taken for which spec (if the Arcane Mage thread is an indication of the others). Obviously Frost Armor affects your Haste caps, and Molten Armor affects your crit caps, so check the threads here for Armor advice. (armors are courtesy of Firebert)
I think I’ve scored an upgrade! I think..
AMR can also help you with that. Click the item you have currently equipped and look where the item you’ve just got is in the list. You can also select a few options: let your current gear count toward the value of the item too or let AMR calculate the maximum possible value for this item without looking towards your other gear. In short: if you swap item A with a lot of hit with item B without any, AMR will check if you still have enough haste on the rest of your gear and how much of an upgrade B will be in relation to the rest of your gear. If you can still maintain the hitcap without sacrificing lots of other stats, it is scored higher and vice versa.
A little side note.. Do check if you put the filter on ‘absolute’ or ‘relative’. Especially with trinkets, this can matter quite a bit for discussions on sites and stuff.
A few mage pointers
- Arcane mage hybrid spec cap = 9762 (9244 as a Goblin)
- As a fire mage, you'd want to enforce the 'At Least' mode, because you don't want your Combustion or Pyro's leading to Combustion to miss.
- With the add on, you can easily export the data to WoW itself, so you can easily reforge stuff / buy materials.
If you already knew how to use AMR and thought this guide was a wall of text with nothing new and too many words, that's lovely, but not very constructive to add. Maybe you could give your fellow mages a few extra pointers instead?
