I know they fixed it so you can't preplace the portals, but are you unable to place them after the pull and you go on the belt? I tried everywhere and kept getting an error.

portals don't work on the belts.

Just do the fight properly without trying to abuse portals. That said strategic gateway use is important for doing the fight in a legit manner. Depending on raid positioning, movement, and if/when the locks get targeted by lasers you may want to have the locks position closer to the center of the room so as to not outdistance the gateways into despawning.
