What do you think of Angry Joe?

I like Angry Joe. He's a good mix of entertainment and information. He can be biased, sure, but he usually will tell you straight up what is good and bad, and doesn't really pull any punches. Also, his interview with Major Nelson about the XBox...fantastic.

He's kind of obnoxious but his reviews are decent. I don't go out of my way to watch his reviews because they're a little bit too long for me to actually sit down and listen to.

The first and only vid I've ever watched of his was for Aliens: Colonial Marines...and man, was he spot on. I like the way he has a no-bullshit view of things, he doesn't try to be nice unless it serves a purpose, and of course how he likes to dress up lol.

Well I don't think that it takes a regular sherlock holmes to tell someone is full of shit if they're going to tell you FFXIII was a good game. Their job is to help the game industry thrive and they aren't going to do that by admitting that a lot of games are really terrible or presented to us in the same way world of warcraft is (as an open beta, an unfinished product).

Every game IGN reviews they say is good. Have you ever seen them say that a game is just fucking terrible? Every game they review is "worth playing".

How long has it been since Square Enix gave us a game that was as vast in it's content as SO: TTEOT or Final Fantasy X? I mean hell, even in that regard, if you can get over the bastardization of Yuna and put up with YRPs shit and forget about Blitzball, Final Fantasy X-2 was a decent game.

I think he's one of the most honest reviewers. Despite his total straightforwardness and brute truth, he makes valid points in his reviews.

I would say that 99% of the time his reviews are spot on. He's honest and gives well explained reasons for any review he gives.

The only people I have ever seen dislike him are foaming at the mouth fans that get angry when he dissents and lambasts their favorite game, but he always gives good reasons.

There's never been any proof of straight up bribes. In the past there have been issues surrounding low review scores leading to ad dollars being lost, or companies putting pressure on reviewers for bad reviews (Gamespot Cane and Lynch review, for example), but we don't hear of any cases like that any more.

All there is now is PR folks doing everything in their power to influence the reviewer to give a more positive review. This comes in the for of inviting them to events, gifts, constantly communicating with them prior to and throughout the review, as well as other tactics.

Honestly though, fans have more of an affect on reviewers than anything else. Give a game that's supposed to be good a bad, or even not spectacular review, and you'll have death threats sitting in your inbox and calls for your resignation. Give a game that's generally considered to be terrible a good review and you've got accusations of bribery and calls for your resignation. If you don't play into what people expect, you piss off your readers, and that's where the money comes from (dem clicks).

After I saw Angry Joe's review I checked the forums and just generally browsed user opinions and he was absolutely correct, but the game still got high scores. Of course there's no proof. Sometimes you just need common sense.

Thing is, Rome 2 was front loaded, it was built in a way to get high scores, even the goddamn developer said that they are building it to do just that, the first few hours of the game that an average reviewer would play were alright, play beyond that and it all falls apart completely.
Joe played the game for 40 something hours I think before he reviewed it, while other reviewers didn't.
Takes a while to get a proper impression of a grand strategy game, same with MMO's, and reviewers rather just get out their reviews asap as the embargo lifts.

The exact same thing happened with Sim City, Totalbiscuit was going to a video of it and he thought it was okay, but his wife who played way more than him pointed out several flaws that he hadn't seen yet so they made the video together.
